So, Edge magazine, a respected publication amongst older gamers, has recently released a book listing the 100 greatest games from (mainly) the past 20 years. There are a lot of omissions of old classics such as GoldenEye or Doom in the list. They've stated none of the entries are in there based on nostalgia. Each game has to hold up against modern greats in the genre.

Edge: "In compiling the list, we worked to simple criteria: all formats - console, PC, portable, coin-op, touchscreen - were eligible; we could include only a single entry from any series that features straight-up sequels; and each game had to stand up today rather than making the cut for reasons of nostalgia or historic significance."

What do you lot make of their choices? Have they forgotten any important titles?

It's an odd list - lot of recent games on there. And they seem to have a thing for From Software.
I used to read Edge religiously but over the years its reviews and lists have become less important to me.

Eh, anything like this will be subjective. You can argue many games are missing, but it's just one guy's opinion to another.

I know that lists and reviews are just opinion (so oddly completely pointless), but Dark Souls at #1 is random as ****.

Yeah, for whatever reason, Edge believes 12 is the superior FF. Incidently, they did include FF7 in their previous 100 greatest games lists from 2007 and 2009.

tbh I only ever played 7 and 10. 7 was mind-blowing for Playstation 1 days; five whole discs of complete epicness!

FIVE discs?! lol, are you sure it was FF7? It had three discs, of complete epicness, at most I'm afraid to inform you.

Obviously it's subjective but it does seem like maybe this journo was trying a little bit too hard to make his list "different".

Either that or he is completely out of sync with the general consensus, in which case why bother getting him to write a list for the magazine in the first place?

So people talk about it, mention it, mention Edge, Edge is getting free publicity. That's why magazines make lists, it's free marketing.

I know lists are subjective but this is the worst list I've ever seen, almost all of the choices scream "I'm trying to be different lol look at me" :erm:

There are some bizarre choices at the back end of the list, such as Super Hexagon or Her Story, but every game in the top 30 received either a 9 or 10 from Edge at the time they were reviewed. What's more bizarre is that Zelda Skyward Sword never made it in there which also received the rarely dished out 10 score.
