I'm looking at the Japanese Studies with History but I'm just a bit unsure about the loans and the grants I can receive for the third-year as my family doesn't have that much money to spend. I wanted to know specifically about the travel grants and how many times I will be able to get it during the year.

You'll be able to apply for Student Finance as usual for your Year Abroad and fees for that year are significantly reduced as well for that year (£2000 fees if your normal fees are £9000). You can also apply to have up to three return flights between the UK and Japan reimbursed from Student Finance as well, although you'll have to pay the first £300 or so yourself. Check this link for more info.
