Poor Hales. He'll get his century eventually. It's a question of when, not if, but having clocked up two 80+ scores already this series, I really thought today was going to be the day. You feel that, when he eventually gets to 99, he'll be shaking like a *****ing dog.
Still, at least he's cemented himself in the upper order and proves he can make big scores at this level. When you look at Compton and Vince's struggles, you imagine Hales will be disappointed but optimistic heading towards the future.
Full credit to Cook, too, for that uncharacteristically skittish innings. He pulled out an array of shots I've never seen him attempt before, and the Lord's crowd seemed to love it.
I think England will feel confident of getting ten wickets tomorrow. The pitch is now showing signs of uneven bounce, particularly from the Pavilion end. I can't wait to see Woakes have a go, and Anderson/Broad/Finn have already chimed in with key wickets at key times this series. England's seamers will find purchase and look to exploit the conditions, and it was ominous that Herath was enjoying some turn towards the end, because England can always throw the ball to Moeen and even Root in the hope of making the odd breakthrough. SL's backs are up against the wall. They may do it, of course, because they've showed steady signs of improvement. But it'll be a tough final day to survive.
The SL team clearly need some guidance on when to use DRS. There have been some very poor reviews in this series.

Thoughts on who is better out of Virat Kohli and AB de Villiers?
Kohli named ABDV as the best batsman in the word after his match winning knock in the IPL semi-final. Both their talents are known and they have transformed cricket in their own ways over the recent past. I am planning to do a post comparing the two within each format so that we can actually see how they compare. ABDV is the more experienced cricketer, but Virat Kohli has achieved so much since coming into the India team and that is likely to continue!

For me, it has to be Kohli and I'm a huge AB fan but Kohli has transformed me into a fan (except for a couple of games every now and then)
If he continues this form he'll go down as the (or at least one of the) greatest of all times
Plus he's got a attitude and personality which makes him fun to watch. AB is class but Kohli chasing under pressure is un-matchable and ultimately that is what wins you games. When he is in full flow it seems like he can get a boundary off every ball if not more 
His test record is not GOAT material but no doubt that will improve. It seems a bit like the Messi v Ronaldo tbh...3 years ago I couldn't imagine myself sitting here praising Kohli but its a testament as to how he has played
Warner injured for Australia, and that's worrying. Sure, Zampa found purchase the other night against SA, but WI have a spinner in form in Narine, who has a better economy rate thus far in the Tri-Series.

But otherwise a great showing from India - I really think Rahul should be opener in all formats, shikhar dhawan needs to go. Give Rahul an extended run in the top full strength odi as opener

The summer presents Ireland with a big opportunity to make ground on some of their rivals at the bottom rung of the rankings ladder. Rankin will look to impress, before they face Pakistan and enjoy a five-match series against fellow associates Afghanistan.
It's only by playing white-ball cricket that Ireland can improve, after all.
Thirimanne has been struggling recently - but he loves ODIs, and you imagine the shorter format will present him with a good opportunity to get runs.

Such a shame to see what has happened with Zimbabwe. I worry that in 20 years time or so they'll be a mere footnote in cricketing history. I hope not, but losing to a third or fourth string India side by ten wickets hardly fills me with confidence for their future.
3rd or 4th string but some talented youngsters - KL Rahul and Chahal for example will be a fixture in test and odi team for years to come.
the decline though of zimbabwe has not been a secret, ever since their heydey of streak, flower bros etc, they have no produced even one player of note since taibu

Amla had spoken before the match about the top six needing to deliver. And boy did they.
The openers were exceptional, sharing a stand of 180+, and Amla was magnificent. Morris and ABDV enjoyed a flurry of runs towards the end, too. SA posted 100+ in their last 10 overs, and I felt the Windies bowlers struggled for length. Especially the seamers.
Tahir, on the other hand, completely strangled WI batsmen and took the game by the scruff of the neck. His figures were the best ever return for a SA bowler in an ODI. Marvellous stuff from him to get 7 wickets.

Producing players isn't even close to being the biggest problem Zimbabwe have. You can't be expected to have a decent cricket side with the conditions they're under, there's no money and horrible mismanagement and absolutely no way they can have any sort of sustained success.
Brendan Taylor is probably the best example I can think of - packed up an international career to play English county cricket. Jarvis and Ervine did similar. The Currans are eligible for Zimbabwe but understandably won't go near them. I'm sure there are more.
If all Zimbabwe eligible cricketers could play for them with a bit of stability they'd have the makings of a decent side. Producing players isn't the problem, there's so much more going on.

Absolutely. The Windies prove that - just look at the state of the system and set-up, despite the players eligible to play being as good as any WI crop arguably. Look at the way they've enthralled and encapsulated millions at the T20 and World Cups.
Let's hope the same thing doesn't happen in South Africa.

With Australia and SA washed out the other day, it represents a must win game for the Aussies. If they win, they know they'll advance to the final.
Maxwell is in desperate need of a score, to be honest. Khawaja has made some good starts too, but needs to convert into a match-winning innings really.
It was disappointed to see Zampa rested against SA given his form. Obviously, the wet conditions didn't help his case, but hopefully he is back in the XI tomorrow after enjoying a good series. With it being such a crunch match, they'd be fools not to select him to be honest.
