    well
    pentene = C5H10 (l)
    bromine water = Br2 (aq)

    so just put them together

    C5H10 + Br2 -> C5H10Br2

    simplez

    bromine water should go from orange to colourless if reacted with an alkene

    if you draw the full structural formula, all that happens when you add the Br2 is that the double bond breaks and joins up to the 2 'Br's

    i hope that made sense lol

    Pentene, hexene and octene, all double bond alkenes. They have 'spare bonds' which open up and form bonds with the bromine water atoms causing it to discolourise.
    This is all we needed to know

    Simplistically, the alkene bond receives a Br atom at each end and the mechanism proceeds via a bromonium bridge intermediate.
