Does anyone have central auditory processing disorder or know anything about it??

Hiya, I have a normal hearing range but when put in places where there are other noises, I can't focus in on what I'm supposed to be listening to. I can hear that people are speaking but just can't make out the words and so I have to guess what has been said. For example "Come and dance with me" could be interpreted as "he glanced at me"!! I know it's not just because of a noisy room as my friends can be having a conversation on either side of me and I still wont be able to make out what is being said. I only really noticed this at Uni as normally I'm in quietish situations but if one person is talking to me and someone else whispers to me, how ever hard I try, I can't hear either!!

I looked on the internet and it came up with "central auditory processing disorder" does anyone know anything about this? Or if you have any other ideas as to what could be going on I would be very very greatful!!

Thank you!

Go to the doctor, don't diagnose yourself on the internet.

EDIT: And now, you will probably try and mould your symptoms to what you read on the internet when you go to the doctor. Which is bad because you could have something completely different!

Why would they do that?

I agree with Talya. Go and see a doctor if you're genuinely concerned, don't start assuming you have certain afflictions just because the internet says so.

i think that's pretty normal.

Though if it's actual background noise that you can't block out then maybe you have CAPD.

Can you definitely hear and just not understand/ take in the words?

I don't see a problem with looking up your symptoms on the internet. So long as you only look at reputable sites and understand there's a chance you're wrong. ^o)

You should go to your doctor, OP, you could have some kind of hearing problem. The thing is, if you do have CAPD then I don't think there's much that can be done for it (I might be wrong about this.) But it could be something else that can be treated so go to the doc and get it sorted.
ive had a hearing problem my whole life. and its not until recently my doctor finally realised that i have a speech discrimination problem.. my hearing is normal.. but when it comes higher ranger noises (or frequencies..), my hearing literally drops! i was told this effects my hearing when im trying to listen to someone with allot of noises around. i also have trouble listenting on the phone.. i too spend most my time guessing what people say.
like others have said. go see a doctor.. you will probably be sent to have a hearing test and such..
