Chronic fatigue syndrome

hiya over the last week or few days i have noticed i am so tired even though i have had enough sleep

yesterday i could bearly stay awake and last night i was so out of it my head was dizzy i was hot and cold and also i had some abdominal pains that kept going and coming back, my chest was really tight

ive had viral meningitus and while in hospital they did every blood test they could and it all came back clear

can you tell if someone has ME from a blood test coz this is getting me down, i feel sick and my throat is so dry, i start a new job tomorrow i don't want to be continuously yawning!!!

has anyone else got this?? can you tell me how you found out you had it is there any treatment??

I don't think being tired for a few days means anything, to be honest... if you're still tired after awhile, then worry about CFS.

I've been tired for over four years :frown:

There's no diagnostic test for CFS; it's a diagnosis of exclusion, i. e., they rule out everything else that could possibly be causing your symptoms, and then call it CFS. It might just be fatigue from the viral meningitis: in some people it lasts for months. The only thing you can do is consult your doctor; he may or may not order further tests.

so theres no need for me to panic i started thinking i had meningitus again i was fine this morning only i started feeling as though id not even been to bed after about an hour, its so stupid coz this job is so important, the moment before you nodd off to sleep is how i feel most of the day i just thought it was because ive not been doing much lately,

my mum thinks im being stupid but last time she thought that i had viral meningitus!! maybe i should leave it for i while and see how i feel in a few days or a week

thankx for your advice

Also, you have to have had the symptoms of CFS for at least six months before they can diagnose you with it, as well as having ruled out every other possibility as was said before.

However as you have been ill with something like meningitis it probably will just be your bodies way of resting and repairing itself.
Yeah ^^ is right, you have to have had the symptoms for at least 6 months for it to even be considered. I personally have M.E. and the only way they can diagnose it is to rule out any other illness by doing blood tests as a lot of the symptoms are similar to other illnesses like glandular fever.

I wouldn't worry a couple of days of tiredness probably isn't anything. There are other symptoms as well. If you are worrid go to your doctor but you can also check out the AYME website for a list of other symptoms (sorry can't rememeber the address:rolleyes:)

Hope this helps and you feel better soon

Don't worry too much - if you've had viral meningitus your body is probably pretty worn out!

As said, CFS is something that is diagnosed by exclusion - that's what you have if there's no other way to explain your symptoms, so it's not something relevant to you at the moment.

Yeech, I've had it about a year and I thought that was bad. :frown:

I second what more adventurous said...I wouldn't worry about CFS until you've had the symptoms much longer. After a serious illness like that many people have fatigue-like symptoms and it's very rare that these extend into CFS. However, I would suggest that if your symptoms persist you could see your GP for general advice on building yourself back up again. I was lucky enough to be taken seriously (many people with CFS are not, I think more adventurous had this problem at first if I remember right?) and was referred over to a consultant who has been a big help.

Hope you feel better soon!

That can be a big problem with people think it is 'all in the mind' etc but thats total crap, there is more and more evidence being gathered to suggest otherwise

I know people who didn't get taken seriously which makes you feel even worse, I was also lucky enough to be taken seriously by my doctor and by my school for that matter

7 years. It sucks. I'm managing well (mostly) now, but the doctors have pretty much admitted to me that it's never really going to go. I do more than most people I know, and get lots of exercise (well I try), but as soon as I stop or get ill I go crashing back down, usually worse than it was to start with.

I'm afraid the six months thing is crucial - hope you feel better soon and that it isn't CFS.
Anxiety about starting a new job can also make you feel wrecked - hope once you get there you get over the initial stress quickly and start to feel better.

Drink lots of lucozade. Instead of water really, 4 bottles a day I reckon. Lucozade, like alcohol, is the solution to all of lifes problems.
Lucozade is indeed gold. And the perfect hangover remedy.

I don't know much about CFS, so I can't really comment. But good luck.

Another dude knows my trick. If you have 2 bottles throughout the night, you don't even get a hangover. Its amazing stuff. I live off that ****.

I've never managed to drink Lucozade :frown: can't stand the stuff:p:

I've also had to give up caffeine - it's been 4 months  and it's made the most incredible difference.

How DARE you insult lucozade! You should be very ashamed of yourself young lady. Now go to the corner and think about what you have said.
Lucozade did really help me actually, but I put on a load of weight because I basically drank it instead of everything else so I've had to give it up. I'm on 1500 calories a day so I don't get any heavier and Lucozade is worth about half that!!! Bugger.

with m.e. that would proabably be what your experiencing everyday... if you'd just had viral meningitis AND M.E. it would probably mean you could hardly move...

Sounds more like you have flu or a virus. CFS doesn't normally come with a sore throat and sickness.

Do you mean that you actually had viral meningitis, or you only thought you did? If you did have it then your body will already be worn out and you will be prone to any virus going around because your immune system needs time to recover.
