Buying a Cat D car - will it affect my insurance?

So do you reccommend I fork out for an AA car data check, or spend the money elsewhere?

Reply 21

What do you expect the data check to tell you that you don't already know?

Reply 22

Good point. Just to make sure I know the full story I guess.

Anyway, does it look like there's a bit of a dent on this side to you, or is it just me? Or the reflection/light? Hmm...

Reply 23

It got one of those cool roofs! I think the bottom part of the door looks damaged, the top part is possibly either?

The data check will tell you little more than that it was cat D, which you already know. As JC. said, the general condition of the car is more important than anything else

Reply 24

Does look like it has had a new back box (end section of the exhaust) recently given the condition of the exhaust tip.

Reply 25

I agree. Yes, its the Open Scandal version so it has a full sunroof and jazzy interior!

Reply 26

I'd love one of those roofs, bet it leaks though :p:.

If it's not too far it's well worth a look, you can't expect too much for £500 but you need it to be a solid reliable car. That dent could be nasty by the looks of it but photos can play some weird tricks.

Reply 27

Its 2 miles away - i've phoned up yesterday and again today but no answer. The advert specifically says "sunroof does not leak"! :p: it also says "CAR DOES HAVE A FEW KNOCKS AND SCUFFS BUT IS RUST FREE".

Reply 28

LOL, i expect that to be one of those knocks then  It really depends what you want from it realy. I bet it doesn't leak*.

*when it's not raining

Try again tomorrow and then give up. If it looks scruffy would you want to spent time driving around in it?

Reply 29

I don't know, I do want it to be a good solid car and I don't want to have too many problems with it being my first one.

I've also looked at this corsa... its on at £850 ono (what's a good price for an offer? Do sellers drop much?) Its 1997, 3dr, 75000 miles.

Its a little out of budget but the insurance quote I got was £689, which is £111 less than the saxo. So, all in all, it'd probably be a better deal in the long run. What do you think?

Reply 30

It looks a bit better - assuming the worst about the saxo - the price seems about right if a tiny bit on the high side. Typically 10% is the value you should consider knocking down to, more if there's loads of faults which will cost you, less if the car is perfect and underpriced. There's people on here that know a bit more about corsa prices though.

Is that not a slightly 'sporty' model? I.e. are you sure your insurance price is right?

Reply 31

Its a 1.0 12V LS. I put the exact model into directline and it came back with £689

Reply 32

That seems good but those look like a higher model's alloys and rear spoiler? I know little about Corsas though so I am probably wrong! The 1.0 12v is quite a good engine, better than the 1.2 8v. It certainly looks better than the Saxo but pictures tell so little.

Reply 33

Here you go!

It does indeed say alloy wheels and rear spoiler. That's going to stuff up my insurance quote :frown: :frown:

Reply 34

I would wait until somebody suggests whether or not those are standard items, if not then really as there is doubt you should be declaring them to the insurer, in which case yes, it might bump it up:frown:

Reply 35

It is what is commonly known as a "webasto roof", Paul.

Reply 36

Cool roof sounds better  I used to want a Twingo with a canvas sunroof

Reply 37

They arnt very nice to be honest.
It was a popular fit to MGB's.

With the roof shut the canvas billows at high speed and is rather noisy.
The wind catches in the fabric when its open and piled on the back of the roof and makes a lot of noise then too.

Nice to potter round at 40mph though on a sunny day though.

The general rule of thumb when buying a BGT is if its got a webasto treat it as a sunny day toy. If its to be a daily driver find one with a glass roof or a full tin top.

That car is easily worth 500 quid - ASSUMING
It doesn't have any mojor damage from an accident
It runs as normal as expect

For 500quid you say you want a runabout - if it conks out in 6 months will you be bothered?

Reply 39

I do want a runaround - but i'd like to get a year out of it.
