There is a guide on Disabled Student Allowance in the subforum, take a read through that. You need a diagnosis to be 'disabled'. You don't get support unless you have a professional diagnosis, so if you think you have something, speak to the support staff at your institution and ask to have an assessment.
I have a professional diagnosis. I have epilepsy - so is that a disability or not??

Will thyroid problems that will be with me for life qualify me for disability allowance?

You'd need to ask your school/college support advisor about that.

Does it affect your education?

If it is likely to have a long lasting effect on your education or require you to have specialist equipment then yes.

The thyroid problems have affected education a lot in the past (lost most of GCSE year) and will need an operation or radio-active treatment whilst at University. Fairly stable at the moment. Have needed extra time in exams.

Then you should apply

Once you get an assessment done, you should be able to quaffly for extra time easy if you have had it in the past.

Do you need a flat screen monitor because normal ones trigger your seizures?
Maybe i should need one.

Do normal monitors make you have seizures?

The DSA isn't about getting what you can, it is about being given what you need. If you don't need certain equipment and you claim for it you are commiting fraud.
^ I don't agree with that. If you have never used any specialist equipment, how are you to know what equipment you'll need, and what you could possibly benefit from, health wise. If it's on offer, then take it I say.

When I apply for DLA I'm going to ask for an ergonomic chair, laptop, mouse and keyboard - but I've never used them before. I can only hope that they will help with my 'disability' (hate that word!) so I shall ask for them.

That's why they have a needs assessment. The fact is, if you lie during that and they find out you have commited fraud and they are entitled to prosecute. Not worth the Criminal Record imo
Hummm i doubt ud get a criminal record i mean how can they prove indefinately whether or not i need the stuff??` I think i need a laptop i mean when i watch crt tele sometimes the glare can set me off - same with crt screens.
It can't be that hard to make some effort at thinking through what sort of help you're going to use. If you get given equipment that you end up not needing, it will only clutter up your accomodation where somebody else may have really needed it! They're not Santa's factory.. there's a limit to resources and we're not helping the powers that be help us by using those up unecessarily.

Whether or not you will have a criminal record isn't the point. Think about how many other people you will be indirectly disadvantaging because you weren't conscientious!
I'm on longterm meds that result in excessive drinking, incoordination, blurred vision, muscle spasms and a tremor as side effects which make writing virtually impossible. I've thought about it and realistically (to make my life as easy as possible) I'm going to need an ensuite bathroom (I'm sure you can imagine the results of 8 litres a day), a laptop, docking station with a separate larger keyboard and screen (I find the laptop's small keys and screen difficult to use for long periods of time) and a digital dictaphone. I might also need scribes in written exams/timed conditions since I'm rather slow...

I'm just wondering if I ought to put this down on the form and if so how much ...I mean the laptop I'd buy anyway, I could probably find a spare keyboard and the ensuite I don't mind paying for...basically I feel guilty about claiming money!

What do you think?
