Hi there

I'm creating this thread to ask what it's like to study Geology at university level and what sort of careers can you go into with it?

Thanks

Hi,

I've applied for a geology degree for 2016 entry, so I'm not sure what it's like at university level (I've only studied it at A Level so far), although I can tell you about what jobs you can get with a geology degree. Some areas you can get a job in are:

- Extractive industries, e.g. mining and quarrying
- Oil and gas exploration
- Geophysics
- Geological surveying
- Hydrogeology - studying groundwater distribution, quality etc
- Engineering geology - assessing the geological factors which may affect structures including buildings, dams, bridges etc
- Environmental geology - applying geological knowledge to solve environmental problems such as waste disposal, pollution, natural hazards etc
- Geochemistry
- Sedimentology
- Palaeontology - studying ancient life and environments
- Seismology - studying earthquakes and predicting them
- Volcanology - studying volcanoes and predicting eruptions

I hope this helps

Geology rocks!

No but really it does. I love my course, I love my geology friends.

It is such a wide discipline too, although the job market is pretty poor at the moment unless you go into Geo engineering.

Where are you thinking of applying?

Yes I would love to a geology degree in an ideal world but I've decided Med Chem would be more useful

I'm so jelly; I loved Geology at A-level, do you do much work on the palaeontology side of it?

There's so many good fossil sites in Britain alone I would be dying to explore. The field trips must be awesome <3
