Bath Architecture students

Hey this is just a message to current Bath architecture students, but other students too i guess. I'm currently making my mind up between bath and sheffield as my firm and just have a few questions.

1.In the third and fourth years of the Architecture course you do a work placement, is this limited to only Bath? Or could I say go to London and do it? Is it like a certain period of time or is it say a few days a week?

2. Is there much design/arty work on the course because from what I've heard its very mathematical... Does anyone have any examples of any work?

3. As all the students do maths/physics/engineering etc is there a mixture of personalites? [probably sounds like a really stupid question i know...]

4. Is there a field trip on the architecture undergrad course?

5. What are the opening hours of the design studio? Is it open 24/7, if so do many people use it at odd hours?

6. Is there a materials shop on campus for cardboard, foamboard, paints, knives etc? As its a small department is the university well equipped for architecture? How good is the library?

7. Do you have to do a dissertation/ any essays?

and finally..
8. Do you get any time to have fun?

Any replies would be kindly appreciated

im probably going to put bath as my firm for architecture, are you going to the department open day a week on wednesday?
Reply 2
No i didn't know anything about a departement open day? Were you sent that in the post or elsewhere? Anyway it's irrelevant anyway, I have my Art A-level exam that day  So I guess I won't be going...
I see you have four offers... I'm assuming you applied to 6? Where else did u look at?

yeh it came through the post aaggees ago (well like january) - its only from 12.30 - 16.00 but it includes a 2hr visulisation task!!!

i also applied to edinburgh (wasnt bothered about going there) and UCL (i wanted to go there) but got rejected from them both. im probably gonna put bath as my firm and then probably cardiff as my insurance depending on the open day thing. im was quite torn between bath and cardiff so i did one of the ol' pros and cons list and bath seemed to come out on top (however it all lies on the openday!). i think bath won me over because the city is sooo beautiful esp in comparison to a city like cardiff which is has a few nice features to it but nothing like the georgian splendour of bath!

i see your torn between sheffield and bath - what are leaning towards most?

ill let you know what the open day thing was like if you want - i.e facilities, course, tutors etc

hey, im a first year archi, i have a go at answering your q's this evening when ive got a bit more time:smile:

hmm no i definately didn't get any letters about visualisation tasks... sounds... scary! I already went to a general open day, perhaps they had that in their records and so didn't invite me? I'm not sure. :s-smilie: I'm kinda undecided tbh, at first I thought I definately preferred Sheffield as its more arty, and I think I still do, its just my old laziness setting in and thinking well if Bath is more mathematical and less drawin thats less effort... It would definately be great to know more about the tutors and studios and things after ur visit as i didn't get any of that as it was a general open day I went to..
Your offers are pretty good! I got rejected by Ucl too (and really wanted to go there too) and also Cambridge and Cardiff :frown: I quite like how Cardiff is a balance of both Art and Maths I found a link to some of their undergrad work which I'll dig out for you if you liek?
Reply 6
yeh that would be good, thanks. i was so set on going to ucl and then to get rejected it was such a kick in the face!! when i went for my interview though i did find the staff and esp one student a bit condescending. i always thought if i didnt get into ucl i would go to cardiff but then ive never been that keen on the city - the course looks ace and the staff were all really nice at the open day, so it all just hangs on the bath open day! whichever one you pick will you put the other as your insurance?
Reply 7
yeah i was set on going to ucl too, i kind of regret not looking at peoples comments here about how they want "crazier" work before doing the task etc, but tbh that's not my style and perhaps the bartlett is too arty for me... anyway if i put bath as my first i may put sheffield as my back up as its AAA but with general studies, if not my only other offer is manchester... which will most likely be my back up in both cases. how about you? the link to the cardiff work is http://wsa.fotopic.net/

Its 2nd year onwards, AFAIK. You do terms 1 and 2 in uni, then go out after Easter for the whole term, 9-5 mon-fri. Can go anywhere you want, many people go home, to save on rent etc, but lots go to Bristol, Bath etc.

2. Is there much design/arty work on the course because from what I've heard its very mathematical... Does anyone have any examples of any work?
The course is still mainly project based- thats where the majority of the credits are given. Projects have included designing a outdoor garden to define a space, a timber writers studio, a timber covered market(engineering project, intro to structures stuff) A cafe pavillion in Bath and the latest is a family home.
3. As all the students do maths/physics/engineering etc is there a mixture of personalites? [probably sounds like a really stupid question i know...]
Still a big mix- I didnt do art or maths or physics  Get people at both ends of the spectrum
4. Is there a field trip on the architecture undergrad course?
Not in first year, that I know of. Other years deffinately have trips etc.
5. What are the opening hours of the design studio? Is it open 24/7, if so do many people use it at odd hours?
24/7, with library card access. Supposed to have a buddy to increase safety etc, but there is usally people there most times towards the end of projects anyway
6. Is there a materials shop on campus for cardboard, foamboard, paints, knives etc? As its a small department is the university well equipped for architecture? How good is the library?
The SU shop stocks most things you need, foamboard, balsa wood, knives, pencils etc. Pretty good selection, could survive on pretty much everything from there, and its fairly priced as well. Library is massive. Is on 5 levels. Have a really good Arch section, hundreds of journals etc.
7. Do you have to do a dissertation/ any essays?
We do the odd essay for history and theory etc, not that many tbh. Dunno about later years tho
and finally..
8. Do you get any time to have fun?
Of course:smile: Plenty of time for fun.. dunno what it will be like in later years tho! :p:
Any replies would be kindly appreciated

Hope it helps:smile:

RE: the task on the open day- dont worry about it, we had to design a garden area for a writer- was good fun, a nice way to meet people, and an actually pretty good representation of the start of the course! One piece of advice, remember- less is more. Terry, the 1st year coordinator loves that! :p:

hey nat - went for the department day

i really liked it there and im definately putting it as my firm! the course looks really good and the director of studies said it is really design focused but because they work closely with the engineers they design stuff that actually works!!! when you work with the engineers he said that you do the designs and they work out stresses and stuff like that but you also have to know a bit about that stuff. they showed us first year work mainly and some 2nd 3rd and 4th year stuff as well. the work was all amazing and he said that the first year was all about bringing everyone up to the same level drawing, model making etc. i think there current project was designing a family home on a narrow plot of land. all the work was really different and so i think you kinda develop your own style. the design excercise was actually really fun, we worked in groups of four and to design and make a model of a space where you could be quiet and reflective - it was to give you an idea of the kinda of thing they do. we had a small tour of the campus (basically accomodation, arch department, sports centre and union) we went inside one of the accomodation (solsbury or malborough cant remember which) it was really nice and really close to the department! the director of studies and this other guy i think he was head of the civil engs were really nice and friendly.

i hope that helps!

thanks for telling me about it, good to hear you enjoyed it! its really helpful but its also really confusing! i thought it wasn't design based at all which is why I thought I wouldn't like it but what you mentioned sounds quite interesting. I saw the accommodation at Bath and its definately the best of all the unis I've seen. People weren't that friendly when we went but I think thats because it was a whole university open day so it was more stressful. I really want to see some work, I wish they'd put some up on their website! I'm so confused :'(

i remember some of the projects were:

designing a section of a city including so much area of living space and then all sections were joined up to make and city but you had to make sure your work worked well with your neighbours's work - showing importance of town planning. peoples designs varied considerably from tall buildings to 1/2 circles etc.

designing any kind of building (i think) examples people chose - a crematorium, a farmers market, library, wool mill or something, a brewery

http://www.bath.ac.uk/ace/MArch2006 this is a link to yr 6 students work

another one was creating an artists space using timber - this projected was then extended to create a the living space as well using a different material

i hope that helps!

Nope, you probably just can't advertise the competition that's all :-)
Hiya guys i'm at Bath uni was doing cs last year but transferred onto Architecture for this year. I know you can look on current students webpages to see their portfolios etc.

OT, but why did you quit CS above poster?
Found it uninteresting and really really boring. It would be fair to say it wasnt for me lol. The only module I did like was the computation class because that was the closest to math.

Honestly, I didn't do much research into courses or universities when I was applying. I just looked at what I had done for A Level which lead towards computer science. I went into it pretty blind with no idea what it was about or anything. And there was no eyecandy to keep me interested, jking.

Another question for cRaig if you're about (or any other bath architecture people): is it a good idea to join the architecture & civil engineering society, from more than a social point of view???

Thanks

Oi! I'm doing CS.

Some department societies are good, like maths, but others do nothing.
HaHa sorry!! :s-smilie:
What year u DakeDake?
