I have a dissertation survey that I need people to fill in!

I agree with this, however. Perhaps you could have given a brief definition in the beginning of the survey.

Ah maybe, I'm considering experience in general and how people perceive what is an experience, so anything I said would start to narrow it down and lead the answers towards a bias.
I could have maybe included a definition of experience, but I think it's a word where everyone knows the meaning!
