Been some controversy surrounding this, namely Gerrard's inclusion over Zidane.

Gonna have a go at mine, which is a bit different..

Casillas
Maldini, Nesta, Puyol
Lahm, Seedorf, Gerrard, Xavi, Cristiano
Iniesta
Messi

Hardly a playable team with CR7 leaving the left hand side a tad exposed, but that midfield and defence is ridiculous. Not sure how Messi would play as a lone striker.

Too many honourable mentions to list.

Yours?

Gotta question Cannavaro's inclusion there. Obv world class but not really famous for his European exploits.

What's it based on? Champions League exploits? If so,

Casillas
Lahm, Puyol, Nesta, Maldini
Pirlo
Iniesta, Xavi
Zidane
Messi, C. Ronaldo

One would assume so. Although I imagine UEFA could be classed as European championships.

Maradona never played in the CL, and nor did Johan Cruyff (unless you meant Jordi, of course).

European Cup is a different beast.

It doesn't mention CL, it just says UEFA. They are UEFA players. Maradona played in the UEFA Cup and the UEFACup Winners Cup.

Johan Cruyff won the European Cup (a UEFA competition) three times as a player.

The team is based on those who were voted in the Team of the Year, though, and that wasn't a thing in the 70s/80s, otherwise I agree with you, get Maradona and Cruyff in there.

There almost needs to be two kinds of awards for things like this: pre-1992, and post-1992. Seems a shame players like Souness won't get a look in, when he was integral to Liverpool reaching five European Cup finals in nine years. What a record. Only Xavi and Iniesta can hold a candle to that.

The one thing that's always boilded my piss with team of the year/tournament is when right backs are played at left back and vice versa. Also when Phillip Lahm plays all season as a holding midfielder and gets selected as right back in ToTY

He's on the bench on the official one, but tbh, as good as he is, I can think of 6/7 strikers I'd have ahead of him
