Call some of the firms you're interested in and ask. If you don't get a straight answer (which wouldn't be a surprise) then I'd apply, hopefully secure a TC, and then ask to defer. You'd be surprised how many firms will be happy to accomodate you as they've been "over-subscribed" by applicants.

Oh, and at the risk of being over-pedantic, law firms are not companies. It might sound like a silly point, but if you refer to them as such in application forms it'll look dreadful.

It all depends, and I guess its firm specific. I do know that a lot of the larger international firms actively encourage gap years especially if it helps develop skills which will be of furtherance to you (and them) later in your legal career.

Though if you think you have the grades and the cv to get a TC at the firms you want then go for it and defer- if your in a position now to secure that contract you may be sorry later that you didn’t.
