Is medicine the course I need to take?

This might seem like a very basic question but I was wondering what the different qualifications meant for example MB ChB medicine and other ones.
Hopefully if all goes well I want to be a brain surgeon (I know a lot of work is need to reach this and things can change don't worry) but would taking medicine at uni be the right step and do the what do the different qualifications mean?
Thanks (I'm going into six form next year)

If you want to be a brain surgeon, you'll need a licence to practise medicine (and a lot beyond that), which you can't get without a primary medical qualification (i.e. a medical degree). So yeah, you'll need to take medicine.

The qualification names don't mean much -- they're all equivalent to each other as far as applying for foundation training is concerned.

medicine on UCAS (website which you use to apply to universities in the UK) is under the code A100 usually, so when you come to apply as long as the course has that code, and is 5/6 years long then you will be fine.

you do need to do medicine and become a doctor to become a qualified neurological surgeon.

but medicine isnt easy. you need 6A/A* grades as a minimum at GCSE to include english, science and maths, and at Alevel you need AAA at least i biology, chemistry and another subject of your choice.

the course is also very competitive to gain entry onto

the C in english may really hold you back as most universities courses wont accept any lower than a grade B in english GCSE!

see if you can try to push it up to a B!

Definitely work up and knock up your grade from a C...you will greatly restrict yourself from the majority of med schools in the U.K.

Medicine is definitely the course you need to take if you wish to be a neurosurgeon.

MB ChB, MB BS, BM BS, etc are all different ways of saying "bachelor of medicine and bachelor of surgery". They are all primary medical qualifications which allow you to practice as a doctor and enter specialist training e.g. to be a surgeon.
