I suppose you could say hills..though they were here long before the uni was!
true.....the hills take every bit of juice out of u. Plus the roads of sheffield are supposed to be one of the worst in UK. Other than that.....its a total dream.

"My ear pericing hurts every time it gets cold... do you have any idea how cold it gets in sheffield?!"

^^^ True quote from last year.

Umm, bad things? It gets damn cold in the winter.

Serious bad things about it: Most of the 2nd/3rd year student houses are all up a VERY steep hill into Crooks, except for the luck/smart/rich few who manage to get a house in Broomhill. Also the station is accross the city from the union, so its quite a treck. Umm, it can be quite noisy at night with all the drunks walking home.. but they may be just cause i live on the same road the union is on.

I think the main thing is that it is a city university, although most of the buildings are in the same sort of order theres no real defined campus. This can be a real problem for some people who was the quiet, security and community you get from a campus union. Personally I'd be bored outta my mind on an isolated uni campus.

I thought it was actually quite mild in Sheffield this winter, could've been worse.

Bad things:
The rain
The hills are a good if you want a decent run but annoying if all you want to do is get home as quickly as possible from lectures.

hills are the worst thing for me, the coldness isn't as bad in my book ...

Last winter was awful.
It's cold in most of the UK though, I haven't really had to experience any hills yet because im living in the city cetre and my departments there too. I can honestly not think of anything I dislike about Sheffield, apart from maybe the number of marketing people who try and stop you while you're out shopping!

The fact that unless a person is particularly knowledgeable about universities, saying that you are going to the University of Sheffield won't seem particularly impressive.
You say 'Sheffield', people think of a steel manufacturing city, and not much else.
The name 'Hallam' gets stuck in people's mind easily, so you say you're going to Sheffield University and they reply, 'Oh is that Hallam?'.
There are more prestigious universities in the country, whose graduates you will be competing with when you finish your degree.

Nevertheless, I still chose it.

I wouldn't consider Sheffield's weather or hills notably worse than the rest of the UK. Even if it is different to what your used to, it's the sort of thing you quickly get used to.

i'm not even there yet and already i can understand. people ask em where i'm at next yr i go Sheffield and half the time peole are like ohh Hallam i'm like no the...(i always wanna say good one or proper one, but i then have this sudden fear that they have a family member at hallam so go) original one and flash a big smile.

a friend of mine her surname is hallam she was like arr your goin to my uni, and so i went no i'm not i'm goin to the proper one, real sheffield, lo and behold, guess where shes goin nex yr...how bad did i feel!

people are more impressed that my insurance is Kent, i think coz its in Canterbury its like oooh haha!
Not Sheff Uni, but Travel around S Yorks is a rip-off (£4 for a day ticket it's gone up!), especially since money hungry First Mainline run a massive amount of (unfriendly) services. No student discounts like in Manchester. I'd take a big thought about coming to Sheff if you're gonna be travelling a lot around the Peaks n stuff. Get a car or bike. No fuss.

Actually i challenge that, In sheffield itself the buses are 50p! 50p to get pretty much anywhere is amazing compared to the terriable excuse for a bus service we have here in Reading where its £1.50 to go like 1/4 of the distance.

£4 for a day ticket is cheap compared to London where it's £5.80 with an oyster card and £6.30 without.
