MASt Part III Forum

Hello everyone,

I thought of creating this thread to monitor/update the status of the Part III applicants. I haven't found any significant information or statistics about the MASt in particular, and so this forum will hopefully help future applicants as well.

Anyone else apply for the MASt offered by DAMTP? If so, please specify your nationality status (U.S. Citizen vs. Non-U.S. Citizen) and what stage you are currently at in the review process.

Note:
1) Permanent Residents of the U.S. are not considered U.S. applicants, so U.S. funding deadlines do not apply to permanent residents.
2) From word of mouth and a friends experience; admittance can be as early as mid-December with BoGS' appraisal near the end of November.

Pending:
If anyone has any advice about when interviews are or how that process goes in general -- I'd like to hear it!

Good luck to all!

For those of us that would like a bit more information, the website thegradcafe.com has some information about who was selected for various programs and when. I've linked the most useful search queries here!

For those of us that are unaware of the general time line and the application decision process, this is how the status of the application evolves:

Awaiting Consideration by Department
Under Consideration by Department
Application with Degree Committee
Awaiting Decision by Board of Graduate Studies
Final Offer Status

Again, best of luck to all.

There seems to be offers already being sent out, with respect to this : http://www.thegradcafe.com/survey/index.php?q=part+iii&t=a&o=# ... I guess then may be some of us should receive a reply soon ! All the best . BTW if I could ask does GRE matter (subject as well as general) and what part does the GPA play for a Master's student ?!

Hey esornep,

Sorry for the late response, no the GRE does not matter and in fact I don't even think that the MAST program asks for the GRE's in the first place. This applies to the subject tests as well.

Hello there!

Has anyone else heard back from the department?

Cheers,
Taleino
I'm still waiting... :frown:

I'm in the same boat. But don't worry, I have a good feeling that we will hear soon. In case you are interested in some statistics, send me a PM!
I'm a uk student applying for the applied maths Mast. Applied quite early on, stuck at "under consideration..". Appears the maths department is much slower than the others :/

The 4 month wait is daunting to be perfectly honest, but it's unavoidable since there are so many applicants. Let's hope that we hear soon!

Hey just thought I should make myself known on this thread. I applied in December for the Part III and I'm still 'Under consideration by department". I wonder what the likely hood of someone getting an offer is? I wish I could find some applications to offer rates but I can't find any stats like this anywhere. :frown:

Hello Greg,

Welcome! Around when did you apply?
Reply 15
Thanks! Ermm probably sent the application off on the 15th of December, and references were completed on the 24th. It went to 'under consideration' on the 4th of Jan. How about you? I really wanted to submit the application earlier (like September) but my uni took 2 months to send me a transcript!!!

I applied around October 14th and my status went into under consideration around two weeks after I applied.
Anyone heard anything??

Recently a professor of mine, who was previously at Cardiff, mentioned that the acceptance letters are almost always sent out late February and/or early March.
Hi all!

First post on TSR! I thought I would join the forum and add my two cents. UK applicant, currently in my fourth year of an MMath undergraduate degree at an average Russel Group university. I applied to the Cambridge part III for applied maths in mid December and have not heard a thing since. I also applied to Trinity College for several scholarships. It seems I will hear if I have an offer of a place by end of Feb to mid March, and then if I am accepted onto the course I will hear about funding from Trinity between March and May.

How competitive are the Trinity College part III scholarships? Are they really just reserved for the prodigies and geniuses? I don't think I will accept an offer without funding.

Here is the catch. I am in a very fortunate position having received funded offers to start a PhD in October at the Universities of Sheffield (for solar MHD), St. Andrews (for solar MHD), and Oxford (for the CDT in partial differential equations). Out of these my preference is Sheffield or Oxford. These universities have given me a deadline to accept of decline their offers of 5th March. I will not have heard back about part III funding by then so I will have to make a decision without knowing the outcome, or request an extended deadline (is this a reasonable thing to do?). For me, a funded offer for part III might trump the PhD offers I have because I like the sound of a really difficult taught course where I can learn lots and lots of interesting things about a broad array of maths before committing to some niche area during a PhD. This I think will then make my PhD stronger and myself a better mathematician. The downside to this would be that I will probably just be applying to one of the PhDs I have offers for now after I complete part III, so why don't I just start the PhD sooner rather than later.

Any thoughts would be appreciated! Thank you, and best of luck with all your applications.

PS.There are some interesting Cambridge graduate statistics here: http://www.graduate.study.cam.ac.uk/admissions-statistics

PPS. This is a good website for viewing previous freedom of information requests to various public bodies, there are some applicant statistics and it is an interesting place to waste some time: https://www.whatdotheyknow.com/body/university_of_cambridge
