Hi everyone!

I am considering applying for camp america 2008.
I was just wondering if anyone knew when applications open, as I can't seem to find the info. anywhere else. Also, how likely is it that I will get placed...do many people not get an offer?

Thanks for your help, Louise, x.

Yeah I'm thinking about it myself now, my friend's friend did it about 3 years ago I'll have to see what she said and let you know. How do you do the interview thing, is it just over the phone? You can probably tell I've not looked into it properly yet, only decided about 2 days ago I should do it  x

They probably open after Camp 2007 has ended, around September/October time. I don't think I'll be able to do it this year because I applied to late but I'll definitely be applying for next year as I think it's possible to do during my uni holidays. Also, if you're worried about your application then why not get some experience working with children now, over the summer holidays. Seems like the perfect time to me. Volunteer with an after school or summer holiday club or something.

I used to help at a kids youth club, worked in my old primary school for a bit last year, do babysitting and I'm going over to China and Inner Mongolia in the summer to some of the really poor areas where my school's built a school for primary school aged kids (said school a lot in this sentence), taking over supplies and equipment for them. You think this is the kind of thing they'd be looking at?

its about 9 weeks including staff orinetation * getting to know eachother and rules and stuff*
there are many different types of camps you can go 2.
girls scout.
private owned.
special neds.
religous.
and much more.
A camp like Camp echo lake has 25 applicants for every female spot, but its one of the best, and it has 10 applicants for every male spot.

The hiring process:
What usually happens is you complete a online staff application. The application is the first glimpse into who you are and if you are the right fit for the camp and its staff. once they receive the application the camp director should email or call you regarding the application and potentially ask you to contact them to have an initial conversation about you and camp and determine if you should go further in the hiring process. This is also when you will discuss what positions you might be interested in and qualified for at camp. If you move forward in the process, you will schedule a day and time for a personal interview (on the phone or in person for approximately 60-90 minutes) with the director possibly and discuss references. They will then send a reference form to you to fill on. then you have a personal interview.Once you have completed your interview and they have received all three of your references, they will then review your application, interview, references, and notes and let you know if they are going to offer you a position on staff with them for the coming summer.

i have researched it a bit
 hope i helped xxxx

yes.
they want to know how good you are with kids, and this experience of yours should proove that you can work with children ect... they will also want to know in the refernces ( filled out by 3 different poeple who arent family or friends) this sort of stuf and if you are capable of living in a camp enviroment and how wel suited you are for the job..

If your a general counsellor you get paid about is $525 - $750.

i read somone asked that they were 18 on 4th june but not in time for their visa for the 1st june .read this!

I won't be 18 on June 1st - can I still apply?

It is a visa regulation that participants travelling to the US with Camp America must be 18 when they fly. However if your 18th birthday falls within the first week of June, and you are an exceptionally skilled and experienced applicant, an exception may be made on an idividual basis. Please discuss this with your interviewer.

You dont have to pay for food or accomodation, and i dont think flights either. was that what u asked? im not sure : s lol xx

Probably is worth pointing out though that what you pay and how much you get paid depends who you choose as your agency. For anyone interested I advise looking at

Camp America http://www.campamerica.co.uk/
CCUSA http://www.ccusa.com/country.aspx
BUNAC http://www.bunac.org/

I'm sure other people know of other agencies who do this kind of work, but I think these three are the most popular at the moment. From the CA2007 thread, BUNAC was getting alot of good recommendations.

You probably won't get paid weekly, although you might be able to get an advance on your final salary once you're a certain number of weeks into the summer - these arrangements vary camp to camp.

I earned a total of $1275 (Support Staff Rate) during the summer. Which, pro-rated over 9 weeks is $141.67 a week.

When I was over there the exchange rate was about 1.8 USD to the ££, so that worked out at £78 per week.

The exchange rate is now about 1.96 USD to the ££, so nowadays that would be £72 per week.

But the ££ value isn't important, doesn't matter in the slightest, as it puts no weight on the fact that your $1275 goes a very long way, as stuff is generally cheap in the USA, so you're getting good money for being out there, especially as you don't have to pay for flights etc.

As for what I spent it on, well a took with me about $500, and took out money elsewhere along the way too.

Whilst you're at camp, you don't spend alot, the only things you worry about then is what you're spending during the evening time, and then during your day & 1/2 off per week. I was spending about $30 a week during the summer.

The bulk of it of course goes AFTER camp, during the travel bit. Greyhound is cheap enough, the fares do soon rack up however, and obviously accomodation, which goes on average at about $20 a night.
For this reason I recommend catching as many overnight trains/coaches as possible!

Clearly then everything else is on your activities/sightseeing, meals where-ever you are visiting, and local travel passes! Plus of course, any shopping you want to get done!!

Wanted really badly to do it last year and this year coming, but because of other commitments still haven't managed to :frown: I promised myself I would next year.
I think there are a few subjects on it in the Gap Year section.

It doesn't help when I get emails from them, I get so tempted to just apply and screw what I'm supposed to be doing this summer!
