So I'm chatting to a friend online. They do not have a green dot next to their name or a mobile phone icon when on the desktop version. However when on fb messenger app it tells me they are online and active.

Can anyone explain?

Facebook has since made some considerable changes to the Facebook and Messenger apps on both IOS and Android. Your friend may have his or her chat settings set to offline, in both apps and or only on desktop so they would not show up as online. However, I have noticed especially when I have been on Facebook on the PC, that someone lets say my mother, when she replies to a message, she will show as online, then once she backs out of messenger she will show as offline. As she is set as offline on both apps, and she has both the green dot and next to it it says MOBILE. Hope this clears it up for you
