If you've been to Oxford before you see that it isn't really a car friendly place. A lot people just ride bikes and use buses as the main way of getting around. I think they are quite strict on this policy though so I wouldn't risk it.

the policy is that students who live in halls have to sign a form declaring that they will not bring a car. there is very little car parking space in oxford, especially near the universities (which have tiny car parks).

also, a lot of the backstreets are permit parking only - i dont think you can be in halls and get a parking permit from the council - which means you will definately get clamped/fined for leaving your car nearby.

fortunately, brookes-town/clubs/pubs is within walking distance, and buses are incredibly regular in oxford (every 5 mins really). when you get there you will see thousands of bikes locked to everything in sight - that tends to be the main alternative to buses. oxford is really ****ty for cars

Ok, thanks for the info. It's really just for getting back home once a month or so. Is car parking more friendly the further out of town you go? I don't mind leaving it several miles away (as long as safety isn't an issue.)

yeah probably - that tends to be general rule in most cities doesnt it (it is in exeter). i lived near the outskirts at the ass end of headington for a year and I seem to recall the streets where not restricted by parking permits BUT the further out you go, the further you are to the areas that your car is more likely to be nicked (in oxford anyway).

i think if you are in a shared house you may be able to get a permit for the street - something to ask the council about. i dont think there is a restriction on student-rented houses having permits (though it may be 1 or 2 per household), its just that you cant bring a car and live in halls (i suppose the council dont have 300 spare permits for 1 street if a halls of residence happens to have been built beside it).

do you live in north london? there is the oxford shuttle but - oxford-london return for under a tenner, and goes at least hourly... takes about 1 1/2 hours.

£7 return before 3 o clock with student ID I think.

and yes, you can get warned and fined for having a car whilst in halls. Crap loads of Cheney students still have one though.

If you're in a house you can obviously have a car. You may have a drive, there may be space on the road or you may be entitled to a residents permit.

As others have said, there really isn't much point having a car for your time at oxford. Free bus pass when in halls is fine to take you anywhere near.

Is a bit of a pain for coming back during breaks. If you are able to travel light, you can just get the train or a coach, but if you don't you really need someone to come and pick you up. I do recall seeing a shop in Headington that provides cheapish storage for students amongst others (although normally there is a lockable storage place in your halls). I dare say there is some relatively cheap option for transporting things back home for inbetween terms etc.

ha ha yeah i noticed that when i was there for my interview. Do past students sell off their bikes or is it better to get one before you come and bring it with you?

if youre in cheney or warneford halls than theres parking on cheney lane and warneford lane. for morrell and clive booth theres parking on john garne way and also most of the surrounding streets are non residents. not sure about the other halls. parking on cheney lane is very dodgy - this year ive had the badge stolen from the grille on my car and the roof completely battered in, was a wreck and big job to repair so park on warneford.

Hi, im off to oxford brookes this september and after reading the halls contract for the wheatley campus where il be staying they totally object to anyone in halls having a car ! ive just paid my insurance recently in one lump sum for the year so only expense is petrol and it seems a waste not driving my car for this year, the reason i wanted it at uni was so i could come back home on weekends every now and then, is there any way off gettting around having a car at brookes ? do students in halls at brookes still have cars ?

Alot of people did bring their cars, i was in Crescent so it was pretty easy to bring a car as it was in the middle of a residential area. As for Lady Spencer in not sure as its on the Campus it may be harder. As long as you havent given the uni your car reg you could be okay, parking close by to the campus.

Thornhill Park & Ride right between Headington and Wheatley. There's a BrookesBus bus stop (the U1 stops there).
