It's just I think the standard is 4 Alevels with a very high proportion doing 5 in England for the top unis. I even saw it written once that oxford colleges like Johns unofficially expect 5. There are people on this board doing 6. So as Alevels were dumbed down, people just took more of them.(Original post by Sophetta)
Its not actually physically possible to do more than 4 art AHs, although for sciences its also pushing it. Also, applied maths is only easy for people, such as cara, who are naturally good at maths- I wouldn't have been able to do it.
