Mechanical engineering sandwich courses

I'm currently applying for uni and I'm torn between whether I should apply to do a Bachelors degree or a sandwich course (Bachelors with a year in industry). The idea of doing a sandwich course sounds tempting but I'm worried about cost of the extra year and my chances of receiving an offer compared to a Bachelors. I found it very interesting that University of Leicester offer a work placement with Force India F1 because my ultimate aim for myself in the future is become a race engineer in F1 so I feel this would benefit greatly from this.
Placement years aren't as expensive as a normal year and you are paid on the job. In engineering the placement year will be very important since you will have a year in industry when leaving. Also its really the same course as the bachelors, you just have the placement year. Shouldn't affect the chances of an offer.
