I know they're regions of the kidney, but what is there specific function?

Nephron are the function unit of the kidney, which the bowman's capsule, 1st and 2nd convoluted tubule lies in the cortex. Loop of henle and part of the collecting duct lies in the medulla. The cortex and medulla are defined by their appearance during dissection.

Also, renal medulla is connected to the lymphatic system.
