Things like name tags, etc you will be able to obtain from the NAAFI shop when you arrive. They are fully equipped with everything you will need and albeit it maybe a little more expensive. I would not worry too much about the specifics. These will be in the correct format. I don't believe they are too 'nit-picky' with the dimensions and believe yours quoted seem appropriate. Things like your socks, PT T-shirts, shorts, etc get tagged.

There are a lot of things on the list which can be taken with a pinch of salt i.e, individuals travelling by plane from Scotland, etc are not expected to arrive with ironing boards however they are on the list. Deck brushes, etc will be provided for cleaning. You should ensure you have the basics like shoe cleaning kits, sewing kits, brass cleaner, etc. The AFCO will be able to advise you further. I hope this is useful, if you require any further assistance remember I'm 'Here to help'

I don't recall guys needing swimming caps but they would be available from the NAAFI if required, the AFCO should be able to advise further

Pretty good that everything is available there then (makes sense really!).

Cpl at the AFCO told me not to bother with an ironing board as there are plenty there, just to take a decent iron.

My grandparents just called me up and gave me £100 for some new running shoes! Gotta love my old 'uns

That is a great idea to get some good trainers. You will be issued with some 'Silver Shadow' trainers or similar but they are not the greatest and for your own comfort it is best to have your own. There is a cash machine next to the cinema when you arrive, this is a short walk from the NAAFI shop which is attached to the 'newcomers bar'. It is a good idea to make sure you have enough cash to see you through. What AFCO are you dealing with? Good luck for your attestation!

Make sure the trainers you get are actually running trainers, not x-trainers or footy types. They will not allow anything but. If you can stretch your budget to getting yourself a pair of silver shadows, then get yourself a pair of them too, for inspections, as you will have to use your issued ones at some point.

As for ironing boards, yes, there are plenty, but not enough to go around everyone and if you rely on them you'll find that you may have to wait your turn, rather than be able to iron exactly when you want to. I'd get your own if i were you.

Most things are available from the NAAFI, but it is more expensive, so try and stock up on what you can for cheaper - i found that 'Flash' wipes were a godsend for block cleaning - stock up on them !

As for swimming caps, you won't need one and you don't need trunks necessarily - just normal swim shorts, plain in colour and not down to the knee, like bermudas.

Ironing boards are no longer on the kit list as they AFCO decided to take it off. They thought it was inconvenient for recruits to take a ironing board on a train/plane. However, they said that although it isn't on the kit list, if you are driving there yourself or you are getting a lift there then they highly recommend that one is taken. As for swimming caps, I heard that they aren't used but they can be bought at the NAFFI for a small price (£1 I think).

Dont bother with bungees (Those little elastic bands that hold your soldier 95 trousers (greens) up). You wont be allowed to use them as they can cause deep vein thrombosis.

Is it April 1st....?

How on earth can trouser twists cause DVT?! They're aren't even that tight...

Reply 9

Rather counters those tight socks you can buy that allegedly stop DVT!

Do you mean buy my own pair of Silver Shadow's to not use but just store in the dorm (therefore keeping them nice and clean) to kind of cheat inspection?

Aha excellent!

Well I went to a running specialist shop today, it's called Derby Runner in Derby. They were excellent! They had a good look at my feet and told me that because they tend to roll slightly it causes the discomfort I have been suffering with when running (bit like shin splints). I have a cracking pair of New Balance now and whats more, they give servicemen a 10% discount. Highly recommended!

Not that a person of my position should be encouraging subordinates to cheat the system, but yes, that's exactly what i'm saying

Sorry to bring up an old conversation, but I didnt think my query deserved a whole new thread!

Got most of my kit list together, but Im slightly stumped by 'Head Torch', im thinking the type used by miners etc to see where they are going whilst keeping their hands free?

Anywhere near correct in my assumption?

Is this piece of kit a must?

Thanks

thats the type I've bought. One that goes round your head. A certain high-street catalogue company sells em. I've been told by a mate that you should get one that does both red and white lights. I think its about £15 in the catalogue.

Reply 18

Yep your on the right track and i would think its a must, its a way of seeing hands free in the dark - the ones we need on IOT are meant to have a red filter.

Try Wilkinsons - apparently they used to do one fairly cheaply.

try 'blacks' they should do them there northern
