Yes I agree, and I think most people applying will be very aware of this but I know some people are interested in statistics and may find them reassuring. Also it may help someone put their desire to go to Oxford or Cambridge into perspictive, if they see that Law has a low acceptance rate they may feel that a course with a higher rate would give them a better chance. I know they are not everyone's cup of tea, but there are people who like them. I was only trying to save time for those people who would otherwise be searching through the web sites looking for them.

Definitely it was good of you to put them not, if only because no matter what people on this forum say, we still get at least a couple of newbies a week asking for this sort of information. Let's just hope they bother to use the resource you've provided (unlike F. Poste and I's FAQ :frown:).

i still pride myself on being possibly the last student interviewed in the first round of intereviews this year in the entire university. I was told the last interviewing day was 17th of December (the wednesday) - they day of my interview - and in the end i had my interview at about 7pm. It was a wierd feeling, i'd waited ALL day for my interview (i had had a test in the morning) and saw everyone come and go, wishing them all good luck, and then when i came out and returned to the waiting roomn there was just my lone bag left, and the whole college felt exceedingly deserted (since all the students were on hols)

guess it helped me stick in their minds at least!

if only they had subjects by college - thats the ones everyone REALLY wants!

eh? doesn't the back of the paper prospectus have that..? (Oxford at least)

anyway, i'd urge people to not pay too much attention.. my teacher tried to suggest i apply to another college to 'maximise' my chances & i dread to think what she'd say now when it's in the top 3 highest ratios for any subject at any college

but, i applied there because it was my favourite. have some faith in your ability.. if you're good enough..you'll get in somewhere (& i know of at least 3 students in my year at other colleges who were succesfully pooled from mine) rather than trying to skulk in & spending your time wondering if you'd got into X,Y,Z that you preferred anyway!
Take note that all Oxonians so far have said that application ratio's aren't worth the paper they're printed on...

Go to the place you like people, not the one with which looks easist. Three years is a very long time to be somewhere you don't like...

As I have said before (and I can see myself repeating this quite a few times!) I'm not saying the applicant ratios are useful, nor am I encouraging people to look at them, i'm just putting them here so people who do want to see them, even if only out of interest, can do so without wasting their time searching for them on the university website.

I was making a general comment more than referring to you.

Along similar lines, trust the system, yes it isn't perfect but I can't think of a admission system in the UK which is better than Oxford. If you're good enough you'll probable get in, if you don't get in you're probable not good enough; tutors aren't in the habit of turning away good students.
Sure - the OUSU alternative prospectus IIRC. Let me find you a link.
No, I'm wrong. Damn. I know I've seen them somewhere, and I'm sure it was the OUSU book... maybe that was just my year and now they've taken them out.

Isn't this sort of thing in your guide?
The figures are out there somewhere. I remember I saw something about them when I applied; whether it's still on the net I'm not sure. Though it may of been only given to students in my school, I don't think it was a university publication. I'll have a look around the net and see what I can find.

Across the university I think there's about 100 more boys than girls per year, so 52/48 or something.

Mmm, it must be somewhere. Don't worry if you can't find it, it's more curiosity than anything else. It's not like I'm going to completely reject the college I like purely on the fact that it has a couple more male students than average or what not (pretty sure it's inclined this way). That'd be just silly, there are a lot more important factors.

But would I worry if Merton was 90% male? No, most definitely not

Merton probable has more males than females, probable about 60/40 or something like that. Ever college has a good split and at least 40% of one sex I believe; except Hilda's of course.
No, not quite at least 40% - there's still the odd college with a 2:1 ratio.

And alas this isn't in our guide, no, because the information seems to have disappeared

New TV Show: The Ox-Files.
Agents Baz TheMoney and De Ianara hunt for secret information hidden by the university authorities.
Twist: Baz goes mad and moves to Tabsville, never to be seen again.

(Yup, it's official, P5 has made me go crazy. Go ahead and gloat Meg, you know you want to).

Is there? Well, I haven't researched the matter so am in no place to argue.

I fear this may have got the better if me, I can only find university wide ratios, not college based one. Maybe they have them on each colleges individual websites? Hmmm.

You spelt my username wrong, Yata. I'm so not impressed

Are the differentiating second order integral-majiggy thingys fun? I promise I was paying attention when you told me what they were called

I had to mispell it to make it sound "flowing" (you wouldn't understand, you lack sufficient style). second order integral-majigg thingys are not fun. :frown:

We have our college gender ratios in the CUSU alternative prospectus, but they're rather out of date now. Apparently our year at Cambridge is the first to have 50/50 admissions
I'm questioning my decision to apply for Law with the additional exams needed etc. especially now after seeing this data. Thanks for posting it

It's always worth a shot

Ah crap, the college I wanted to apply to for Geog (Worcester) has the most applicants to places (3.9) compared to 0.9 at Hilda's! Does anyone know what Brasenose is like for Geog? I quite liked it there too... help!
