I took escitalopram for a few months; it made me depressed, want to self harm, and I felt incredibly ill. Needless to say I stopped taking it and have no intention of going on an SSRI ever again. That was a fairly severe reaction and doesn't seem to be that common.

There are websites with information about side effects written by people who've taken a lot of different medication, and also the websites with the official statistics for how many people get x, y and z side effects.

Yeah, different types work for different people. I've heard stories about people not getting on with fluoxetine but it was fine for me (apart from the hyperness the first period I took it...I took it when I was older again and there was none of that). So if fluoxetine doesn't work your doc will be able to prescribe something different.
