is LSE's international reputation greater than its domestic one?

What do you think?

I don't know about LSE domestic reputation in the UK.

However in the USA, LSE has a very good reputation for those that have heard of the school. It seems to be very well respected in both the academic and business world. People talk about very highly

I keep hearing lots of good thing from people that I know that I am going to be attending LSE. I have not heard one bad thing from anyone over here about LSE. But that doesn't really mean much.

I have an international perspective too and it's pretty much the same.. those who've heard of it rank it very highly, but those who haven't... well.. they just don't know anything about it. it's most known among academia and in the business world.

Ditto for me. When I say I'm going to the London School of Economics, those who have heard of it get really excited, but most people say, "Oh that's nice, where is that?!" Umm... a little place called England?! Yeah. But as for its domestic reputation, I have a lot of family in the UK who were quite impressed when I got in. Among academic and diplomatic circles I think it might be considered a bit of a "young" school (as compared to Oxford or Cambridge, etc), but all I know is that I can't believe I'm going.
Hi I am Prasad from India. I don't know about the local perception of LSE in UK as I have never been before but internationally, I am sure it has a very good repo.I am currently working as an urban planner in a US based MNC..and had my farewell yesterday. The whole company congratulated me in a big way ..( professionals from diff. parts of the world ).It seems everybody is aware of LSE. thats enough. And I too am not in a position to believe that in few days..I'll be in LSe...wow!
Basically. I am in the UK, and have been working recently with people who do a lot of graduate recruiting. I can tell you that LSE ranks very highly in any recruiters mind. Among students in the UK, it is seen as very post grad heavy, and regarding as being not so much a social place, but a hard working one. There is a massive proportion of overseas students compared to most other UK Universities. However, nothing will detract from the fact that if you're aiming to get a good graduate position with good prospects in the city, LSE is second to only Oxbridge, and in many cases, not even them. That is of course for the social sciences.

That is just my view though

I am in Hong Kong and very few students and teachers know about it. They even dont know how the University of London works. And they usually get mixed up with LSE and London Business School. When I ask my friends in university where they want to go for an foreign exchange programme, their answer is LBS! It really sounds silly that they do not know it only offers postgraduate courses. So it appears to me that LBS is quite prestigious but LSE is usually ignored because of LBS reputation.

Same old story...When I mention LSE to any of my family members in England, they usually say "What does that stand for?" or "Where's that?". My more educated friends/ family seem to get much more interested.

Same in here. Recruiters consider it very highly. Many of them maby even higher than Oxbridge but I guess only for economic studies.... When I say that I'll be going to LSE next year I get mixed answers. There are many people, usually irrelevant with academic studies, that know nothing about it. But my professors and many accademic related people congratulate me and think of my as a "clever" person, which is flattering but completely wrong as a thought. Considering the above I have to say that LSE has generaly a great reputation (at least in Greece), and I am very excited that I'll be there next year!

I have noticed LSE is better known in Washington DC (where I am working at the moment) than Kansas City (where usually live).

I have also noticed that among businesspeople, academics, etc. it is better known than with average Joe on the street.

That makes sense. Your average Joe in America really only knows about universities that

1) have regional ties/affiliations
2) have/had good sports teams (american football and/or hoops) - Miami, Notre Dame, Kentucky, Ohio State
3) are the very top colleges - Harvard and Yale.

I don't think we have to worry about LSE's reputation. It is strong and will not be going away for quite awhile.

hi mateo,

LSE definitely has a very strong international reputation, even in a distant country like india, which is where i am from. Most people that I have spoken to (and by these I mean, people who've graduated from the Indian institutes of Management) say its the best institute in the whole of europe for any1 looking to undertake specialised education in the social sciences, economics and finance. The world renowned LBS offers an MSc in finance too, but has an applicant pool with loads with previous work experience. also, some of India's political supremos have been associated with the LSE either as past students or academicians.....so the name definitely and automatically earns an offer holder loads of respect.
