Fungal nail infection?

Hi guys!

Not a particularly pleasant topic but I was wondering if any of you could help me out. Basically I noticed this bruise-like discoloration of my left big toenail a few weeks/months ago, but dismissed it as a bruise....anyway I recently noticed the discoloration seems to have spread to the opposite side of the nail. Basically, where the left hand side of the nail joins the skin, the nail is discoloured, a sort of purply-brown, and also where the right hand side of the nail joins the skin also. Like I said, I at first thought it was a bruise but after a good few weeks/months (can't really remember how long) it hasn't grown out as you would expect with the nail growing. Also it's not at all tender/sore if you touch or press it, which I would expect a bruise to be. I thought maybe it was a fungal nail infection but I looked that up on the internet and it didn't really seem to specify the same symptoms - all the sites seem to suggest nails are white, thick, and crumbly, which mine isn't. Has any one got any ideas? I don't want it to get worse and end up with my nail falling off! And it's not gonna look very nice in flip flops this summer!

Cheers guys x

i'm not too sure what it could be if it isnt a bruise- maybe you could go to the doctors and have it checked out? or a chiropodist if there is one near you.

My brother had something like this. He left it and it got much MUCH worse. Eventually he went to the DR's and they gave him this stuff like nail varnish that you put on everyday and now it's back to normal!

i shouldnt think it would- but i'd go and get it checked out. apparently bruises can occur really easily, so its probably just that. i did read however that in serious cases you may have to have your nail drilled to get the blood out  :s-smilie: so i'd definitely go and see someone.

hey - i've got what i think is blood under my nail - i cut the top of the toe just above the nail, and i'm pretty sure some blood went under my nail, as i cut some of the nail off and that part went... its purpley-brown - you could well have just bruised it or somethin like that without realising - maybe try cutting that bit of the nail off to see what happens?!

i can't really - its quite near the bottom of my nail! I thought it was a bruise too but I just thought it was odd how it started off being on just the left hand side of the nail and then a similar patch seemed to appear on the opposite side quite a long while afterwards?

I'd just go to the doctors. I can't say for sure what it is without seeing it, but if it was a fungal infection they would have to prescribe you some oral anti-fungal medication anyway. and if it is a 'bruise' under the nail, they might know how best to sort that out.
its not something i've come across much really.
i had a fungal infection in my thumb on right hand ~ and it went all white and then green at first.... and then purple and yellow....was kinda disgusting
got some meds for it...then my thumb kept swelling up, till my mom decided to pop it ><'' :frown: such a PAINFUL experience that i dont wana experience anytime soon...! its fine now *the thumb i mean*...just got a "dent" in the nail that shows up everytime i wear nail polish
