No, to use a scooter, he will need to do a CBT, which will allow him to use a scooter on his one while displaying L plates. Then after doing the full bike test, he can carry a pillion passenger.

Secondly, ive never heard of two on a scooter, you really need a motorbike for that.

1) His driving licence acts as a provisional for a CBT. But he does need to take and pass CBT in order to use a scooter.

2) You may carry a pillion on a scooter but not on L plates. So, the answer to your question is yes, but not straight away. You need to pass a test first.

How easy is the test? My friend did hers in a week but that was of 5 days of intensive lessons. Don't really want my bf to have to do that.

I don't drive, how hard would a CBT be for me?

I just had a poke around google, so to carry a passenger the CBT isn't enough? He needs a full motorcycle license even though we'll only have a scooter?

Gah sounds like this idea is out the window then.

Sorry, but its the same with any two wheeled vehicle
Provisional Licence > CBT > *Allowed to ride alone as long as L plates are displayed. Also restrictions on engine output for motorbikes* > Full Test > *No restrictions*

I dont know how hard the CBT is, Im a 4 wheeled sort of person. Also if you dont drive, you will need to apply for a provisional licence which can take a couple of weeks.
CBT isnt even a test, it's training. Peice of pish really! If you've ever even been in the same room as a copy of something that vaguely resembles the highway code... you'll likely pass it.

Full bike test, IMHO, is harder than a full car test, because you have to be far more aware. Not knocking car drivers or saying a car test is easy... I've done both and the bike test was definately harder in my opinion.

CBT isn't a test as such, but they do have the option to say you need further training before they'll sign you off. However it really isn't that hard as long as you're reasonably safe. Mine cost £90 to do

I use it for my commute into London and it's so much better than the train. I see plenty of people with pillion passengers on scooters.

Could I do a full bike test over the summer? Say 2 hr a day of lessons?

EDIT: Or.. how much is a cheap but reliable 2nd hand scooter?

not sure on the prices - a new one is about £2k but you could probably get one for half of that I guess.

I'm planning on doing the full bike test over the summer (so I can go on motorways as well as carry a passenger) and they reckon 4-5 days at say 6-8 hours a day. Not sure if you could find somewhere that did 2 hours a day.

If home in Surrey is anywhere near Cheam/Ewell I can tell you a few places to try

Hmmm, Cheam is a bit far from me. So is it pretty standard to do your bike learning all in one week? Like I said above, my friend did it like that so I guess I would go where she went.

CBT only takes one day to do. Usually in an empty car park. You also need to take the theory.

I believe you have to wait one or two years before you can carry a passenger. Basically not till your allowed to remove your L plates.

Try and do that before then and you get a £60 fine!

I don't understand, I thought if I did the full license I could take passengers straight away?

The above question is very important, can anyone provide an answer!?

How old is your boyfriend, if he passed his test before 1997 he can drive a scooter with a passenger and no L plates straight away with no CBT (i think)

haha he was only 10 years old in 1997.
Can only carry a passenger on a 50cc scooter and with grandad rights on passing test yonks ago. I just bought a 50cc to learn on. I am old, so don't need L plates. I could take my wife on it, but it doesn't have foot pegs or very much power. If I move up to a 125cc I will need to do a CBT and start to use L plates. Also I won't be able to take my wife on this. For youngsters, it is more restrictive. Must do CBT, then use L plates. Can't take a passenger. CBT lasts two years. Then you need to take a test or do CBT again.
