Postgraduate Life

Hi,
I've got an offer for a research PhD at the University of Warwick. I was just wondering what life is like socially? What are the living arrangements like? Do people go out much? Are there many new postgrads to socialise with?
Are they mostly international or British?
Just anything and everything! Also anything abuot the cost of living, especially if you live off campus how much to run a car etc?

Thanks
xx

Hi Shannon
I am in the same position as you and I have the same question as you

how far do you live from campus , you can calculate the cost of transport

Social networks are probably tougher harder to create for graduates than undergraduates, but that's the same anywhere. There are specific postgraduate halls on campus which could be a way of meeting a range of different postgraduate students. Otherwise, you can live in a Warwick Accommodation house but the downside is not knowing in advance who your housemates will be...

An alternative is to apply to join the Residential Life Team. They are essentially postgraduates and staff that live in halls (PG and UG) but have responsibility for 60+ students. The advantages are (almost) free accommodation, being housed in a flat (or occasionally a house!) rather than a student room, an (often) interesting role on campus, and a pre-existing social network that you can tap into if you want.

The application process usually requires a form, assessment centre, and then individual interviews. I suspect the strongest candidates have some background in leadership, education, mentoring, working in youth summer schools, etc. These things probably aren't required though for people with the right personal qualities. I don't know when the posts are advertised but this is the place to start: http://www2.warwick.ac.uk/services/rlt/recruitment/

The university of Warwick is a campus based university, so regardless where you were before this could be either a new experience or one that you are suited to already.

The university itself is a relatively big(ish) campus, and because it's a campus based university, it provides both an incentive for activities at the university and outside. Socially speaking Warwick has a great number of societies, club and sports which one can participate in which can be found in the link below.

Specifically for PGs, there is I believe also a PG society which tries to build the community of both international locals together in different activities, which have been enjoyable such as trips and pub crawls. In terms of on campus facilities, there is the main student union which include a number of bars/pubs, an Arts center which has a range of shows, plays and acts to see as well as sports facilities. however with the "lack" of campus facilities this is made up of course with societies as mentioned.

For living arrangements, if you are a first year I believe you can apply for on-campus accommodation. For PG specific accommodation this probably is the most expensive but if you have a scholarship or a grant it shouldn't be a problem. There are a number of places you can choose on-campus, specifically I know lakeside which I stayed at was nice in terms of scenery (in summer specifically) which is close to a the grad-hub and tennis/basketball courts.
If you are staying off-campus the three main locations which people choose are Coventry (usually split into Earsldon and Tile Hill/Canley) and Leamington Spa. Leamington Spa is by far the nicest looking out of the two but its further away from campus say 30 minutes in the bus, the town has a number of great restaurants. Tile hill/Canley is right beside the university and can be walked to from the campus, while Earlsdon is more into Coventry which can be taken by bus.

The PG include a good mix imo of both international and national students, and socialising is not that difficult I find. Usually I find the socialising can be split into friends outside of your building/degree, friends in building/degree and sports/club friends. There will always be something to do in Warwick, so I wouldn't worry about that.

Finally Leam is probably on average a bit more expensive where as Coventry is cheaper, atm I am paying 370 including bills per month which isn't so bad.

Hope this helps.
