Another few weeks have passed, another post...
From the current season, Boku Dake ga Inai Machi is definitely up there as one of the best things I'm watching, which I was expecting before it aired because I'm aware of all of the awards the manga has been nominated for, not to mention the director Tomohiko and screenwriter Taku having worked together on Gin no Saji, which I rate highly.
In a similar vein, I read some of the manga for Shouwa Genroku Rakugo Shinjuu and knew I had to watch this adaptation, notwithstanding how acclaimed its source material is, anyway. This stands alongside Boku Dake ga Inai Machi as probably, if I'm honest, the best thing I'm watching this season.
The second cour of Gate has remained faithful to the qualities that made the first enjoyable, so I have no complaints there. I'm not usually one to embrace source material, a web novel no less, that has undergone so many adaptations, but A-1 have done a good job bringing it to life.
I didn't have high expectations for Luck & Logic given that it's effectively an advert for its counterpart card game, but given that I'm somewhat enjoying Shingeki no Bahamut that's of the same ilk, and my tolerance for all things mediocre in the world of anime is considerably high, I figured I'd give this ago. Dogakobo are not a studio I'm too familiar with and the colourful character designs are likely a result of the card game, but other than that, the production is reasonably good. The story is a bit contrived at times, but I've always been a fan of magical partnerships in anime, so that alone incentivises me to keep watching this.
I've made it no secret in the past on here that I'm a fan of Nisio Isin and his long running Monogatari series, and I've enjoyed all of the adaptations by Shaft. So, it was a no brainer for me to pick up Owarimonogatari, even though it's effectively a series of short stories by the writer. Thankfully, Shaft have managed to sprinkle their magic to deliver something that's been enjoyable to watch and offers something that only they and Nisio Isin can.
Dimension W is a weird one for me because I love the premise and the main duo. The collaborative effort of Orange and 3Hz, two studios I don't know a great deal about, is encouraging, given how beautiful the animation is. Unfortunately, the episodic approach they've adopted hasn't helped, and the last few episodes haven't either. I want to like this, but it's playing hard to get.
Hai to Gensou no Grimgar was one of the few that I was looking forward to watching because I enjoy these RPG themed anime, despite it being done to death, and I'm glad to say Grimgar has managed to offer a different approach to its contemporaries that has worked so far. It helps that the animation by A-1 is nice to look at.
Kono Subarashii Sekai ni Shukufuku Wo! is definitely the most surprising series for me because I went into this with moderate expectations, given that it's from Deen, but I have to say it's exceeded them massively. The comedy is almost always on point and never fails to get a laugh out of me each episode. It helps that the three girls are so ridiculously over the top, but remain distinctly likeable.
Ajin has the most riveting story line this season, period. I'm probably looking forward to this one the most each week for that reason alone. It's how a thriller should be done. I can see why many people are put off by Polygon's soulless character designs, but I didn't mind them with Knights of Sidonia (it actually added to the anime's appeal) and, frankly, the story telling more than makes up for it.
I'm watching about a dozen more but I'm tiring, so I'll just mention a few that I need to play catch up on or I'll be putting on the back burner for the time being. Akagami no Shirayukihime S2, Prince of Stride, Shoujo-tachi wa Kouya wo Mezasu, Bubuki Buranki and Durarara!! x2 Ketsu are things I need to get through, hopefully this weekend.
I'm probably going to, unless anyone objects otherwise, drop Musaigen no Phantom World for now, even though the first episode was pretty fun to watch and this is a KyoAni special, but I just don't have the time to watch this weekly. Similarly, Active Raid, despite having some promise, didn't jump at me during the first episode, so that goes to my stalled list for the time being. Schwarzesmarken is something I want to watch and I might reconsider stalling this as I liked Muv-Luv.
