Hi,

Liverpool has lost it's accreditation as far as I know, go to http://www.avma.org/education/cvea/colleges_accredited/allcolleges.asp for a full list of who is (I can only see RVC, Glasgow and Edinburgh). Dublin lost theirs this last year and Bristol fairly recently too.

Why do you think we've lost it? do you really know what it is or entails? Liverpool is not nor has it ever been accredited- we're spending money on facilities, teaching and our patients as opposed to pandering to the American government on the behalf of the handful of students it would benefit!

Presuming that vet schools have 'lost it' is a bit of a slurr on them when they've never had it, it implies fault, of which there is none.

I know for a fact Dublin and Bristol have lost it because we have had students join us from there as a result. There are many weird and wonderful criteria (such as always having toilet paper in the bathrooms) that enable AVMA accreditation and it doesnt mean that a uni is bad if it doesnt have it, I was definately not implying that! Liverpool used to have it, it may be they chose not to pay for the re accreditation, it costs a fair bit to be reassessed and uni's are every 7 years. This may be their reason I do not know, hence me saying I do not know above  Edinburgh are due for reassessment next year, it will be interesting to see if they pass this time around!

I am almost positive that Edinburgh, Glasgow and RVC are the only schools in the UK that ever received full accreditation from the AVMA. Dublin was in the process of being accredited around 3 years ago, and is probably still in the process. It is extremely uncommon for a school to simply lose accreditation (it is probably as hard to gain it as it is to lose it, unless there are some drastic changes). Sometimes the school can lose its full status, but even than graduates still technically have a degree equivalent to one from North America.

On the other hand, maybe something happened 7 years ago that I am totally unaware of and that no one has told us about (including the AVMA!)
Dublin lost it's accreditation last year 100%. We had to make room for some of their american students this year. We have about 5 "bonus" ppl in our year now!

If Glasgow didn't have it, we would be almost screwed lol Glasgow Uni is short of money and isn't very generous to the vet school and so we need our American students to fund the rest of us!! Our year is about 20% American!

Some of our American students are actually thinking of staying in the UK after they qualify.

I think that maybe Dublin lost its "reasonable assurance" to gain accreditation for two reasons: 1) if it had full accreditation to start with, the students would graduate from an accredited school, even if the school lost its accreditation during those 5 years, and 2) It was never on the AVMA list for fully accredited schools!

Again, I don't know all the details... Also, during the time that Dublin was being visited, two universities in Australia were undergoing the process, and they both received full accreditation.

Are there any Americans/Canadians who went out of high school at Glasgow?
All I know is that we were told by our dean that Dublin lost it's accreditation and that Glasgow and Edinburgh had decided to accept some of their American students.

I don't know of any Americans or Canadians going straight from high school to here. I believe they have all done a degree previously.

Hey I know that we got one from Dublin because of the loss of their status and the North Americans here at Ed are a little worried about the review next year as a result because if the status goes before you graduate the degree does not count without you sitting the 'forgein vet' exams. Sorry nessa!

This is all very confusing! Because I have definitely read that students are protected and as long as they started at an accredited school, then they will have graduated from an accredited school, but maybe that is only for North American schools...

I think what happened at Dublin is a different story. They were going up for review in 2003 to receive full accreditation and it sounds as though they did not gain it. They never were fully accredited. The students who transferred most likely did so because if Dublin had gained accreditation during the course of their degree, than they would have graduated from an accredited school. However, since Dublin did not gain accreditation it has to wait 7 years before being able to be reviewed again.

Sarah, do you know if Edinburgh is confidant in regaining accreditation?

I would say that Edinburgh are pretty confident about retaining it, they have a lot of prof's who work (as guests or have worked there full time before) in the US to advise them and they have so many North American students here they have a HUGE incentive to do everything they can retain it. As I said before, I dont know exact reasons why the others lost/did not regain theirs but I cannot see Edinburgh loosing theirs without a big fight!

I know this is an old thread - but Dublin DID NOT EVER have accreditation. We were in the process of being accredited, and lost that 18mths ago, but got it back on track and ARE now fully accredited. All those American students who left, would have been accredited had they stayed on.
I was under the impression that you could sit extra exams to get accreditation to practice outside of the uk, is this correct?
Hi, I have a few AVMA related questions:

1) If you go to a non-AVMA accredited vet school and after graduation would like to work in the US, is there an exam you can sit?

2) On the Nottingham webpage, it says that they will apply for accreditation in 2011. Is the accreditation process a long one? (years as opposed to months?)
(Quote from website 'It is anticipated that we will apply for accreditation in 2011' http://www.nottingham.ac.uk/vet/undergraduate/faqs.php#accreditation1)
Hi, with reference to the question I asked above, I found this online http://www.avma.org/education/ecfvg/

Would this apply to UK vets from non-AVMA schools?
dublin has become avma accredited recently!
Where does the AVMA let you work? Is it just US & Canada or would Australia/New Zealand/Asia etc be included?
