durham university network connection

Is it just me, or it's the problem with the network connection ?
I can't update my spyware. First, I use SpyDoctor and I couldn't update.
Next, I use Spy Sweeper and it's still the same .. I couldn't update it.
Now, I installed another one, Ad-Aware SE and STILL, I couldn't update it!!
What's wrong ??

And my antivirus, Kaspersky. I couldn't update it as well ..

Please help ..

Take a look to see if there is an option for a proxy in the settings for your spyware/anti-virus software, enter address 'wwwcache.dur.ac.uk' and port '8080'. If there is only one box put 'wwwcache.dur.ac.uk:8080'

Hope this helps

The durham connection is a pig to use.

And the virus stuff they gave out hogged all the system resources, so I had to find other work arounds.

They sorted out the constantly disconnecting msn yet?

Ian

For AV I use avast and I just use Windows Defender for Spyware

Yeah MSN still disconnects now and then - though not as bad as a couple of years ago, back then sometimes you would be off for a whole day, maybe two!! Now if you can't get on you're usually able to get back on within the hour

I just end up using www.meebo.com instead of MSN, solves any disconnection problems

oh yeah.
My DUO webmail always get blocked whenever I click on it. (Using IE though)
It says "Content was blocked because it was not signed by a valid security certificate". How can I fix this ? It's annoying.

Does anyone know how windows vista is on the connection? I know they sent that email saying it now worked but I'm a bit scpetical about bringing my new lappy up.

I have a friend with Vista (he just got a new PC) and it works perfectly on the network now - at first it didn't work but it's all sorted now and runs fine

How many devices can you hook up to the port in your room at Durham because I know at some uni's you can only have one device at a time. Also, anyone know how fast the internet is in your room?

10mbit, up + down. You are only permitted one device per port and if you have multiple devices connected the network can detect this and place you into a permanent state of quarantine. Basically if multiple MAC addresses are connected to the single network port it will not work (although you could of course - in theory - use a router, although this isn't permitted)

A bar should appear across the top of the page saying 'To help protect your security...etc' if you right click it and click 'display blocked content' it will load.

You can tell it to 'permanently accept this certificate'. One of three options I think?
