i'm 95% sure that all the halls have an internet connection.
Paul Kent is in a bit of a crap location. Its near Crescent if I'm thinking of the right one. Basically, its a bus ride to anywhere decent. Granted you'll get a free bus pass so there's no financial implications of that, its just a bit annoying. It's about 12 minutes on the bus to the main campus. About 10 minutes to the decent bit of Cowley Rd and probably about 20 minutes into the centre.

Having said all that, I have to get a 20 minute bus to my lectures and its not that bad tbh.

when i went, paul kent was new, expensive, and had facilities that most halls didnt have (en suit, internet connection etc). now there seems to be plenty on offer at the other halls (especially the brand new ones) so a decision based on facilities may not be necessary. with regard to location, it's a bit far out compared to the rest (i always felt that you either needed to be near town for fun and/or near campus so you dont have a huge trek). its not far from cowley road in all fairness, (but more near the asian end?). I wouldnt put it as first choice...

Yeah, the end of Cowley Rd its near is near the Rileys pool club, Co-op, Wetherspoons, TK Maxx, Matalan, JJB etc. Proper rough area there, makes you feel really intimidated sometimes. However, it is far enough away from the halls I would have thought, its just that the nearest place to go out is a hell-hole.

Wouldnt particularly like to walk up to the main shop area of Cowley Rd... its a good 25 to 30 minutes walk from there tbh.
so would you go for crescent hall over paul kent?
cause thats the choice i have..
ooo Are you doing Foundation Art? 'cause that makes two of us!
I'm probably going to stay in Paul Kent Halls, can't tell you anything about it though, sorry. Although i do know there's a rather fun 360 degree photograph of a bedroom and kitchen on the Uni website and it looks okay:

(don't spin for too long though -it gets dizzying:p: )

Crescent is basically in the same location. I haven't been to either, so i couldn't really tell you. Given Boosh reckons Paul Kent is fairly new (and I dont think Crescent is) I'd be more inclined to choose there tbh. I suppose it just comes down to the prices and whether they are self-catered and en-suit or not and your personal preferences with regards to those.
done & done. i put paul kent as my first choice.

yeah i am doing the foundation art. Im def going to go into Paul Kent... although its a bit annoying that we have no other choice really! But i guess all us art lot will be together. Do you think it will be quiet starting weeks before everyone else?

(this is my bf's account by the way)

Much love, clare xxxxxxx
Hi Clare,
Great to hear there's somebody else! i don't know whether it will be quiet or not, how many Foundation places are there? Plus i'm sure not all people will be living in halls. I think the midwifery course starts earlier as well though so they'll probably be in the halls too.
midwifery used to be in halls a few years ago (with the nursing students) but they halls were closed. wereever nursing students are, you should find midwifery students

Nursing students are just spread about in normal halls I think. I've met one who lives in my halls (warneford)
oh ok, cool. they used to be in halls actually on the jrh site (with other random freshers like myself) but that's closed down now (thank god!).

wierdly enough, ive just learnt that my old mentor who left exeter to go to nottingham has just taken a professorship at brookes. she is the bees knees in the field - yet another example of how up and coming brookes is - stealing top lecturers from nottingham!!

edit: infact, she is worth £millions. she was high up in a research council position and is a topclass researcher, which means when the rae2008 happens, brookes could be awarded the top mark for research in her field (and therefore secure top position in the league table and bring in big money similar to our sister university in oxford, literally  )

 Go Brookes...
nursing & midwifery students are just in with everyone else, so we "get a chance to mix" which is nice

from the sounds of it i think i'll be living with the art kids! i'm getting quite excited about uni now.

indeed! there is a wierd war of wages and rank going on at the moment. with the rae2008 looming, universities are desperate for big name academics and are hiring people to boost their profiles. its a good time to be a good academic, and a bad time to be a bad one!
yeah paul kent halls are nice but really far away and the buses aren't amazing! every half an hour and often come early so u miss them - great! but the actual halls are good, there is internet connection and i think most are ensuite, plus there is a good computer room you can use.

only problem with art foundation at paul kent is that the contract runs out before the course ends...but they say they will work on this..so you may not have this problem when you do it...brookes art foundation is rather unorganised! also the starting early bit, this year people in halls had to stay elsewhere for the first two weeks as their halls contracts hadn't started...so yeah, you might wanna find out about that too.

Umm I finished my first year at brookes living at PK, so feel free to ask me questions.

Regarding the contract thing, my friend is in the same situation and he was told by the university to move to cresent hall @ methinks 50 quid a week.

All blocks have internet and ensuite cept for Rowan house which some dont have ensuite.

Cresent hall has a lovely reputation for having chavs whihc hang outside in the courts.

Computer room is great, it has bailed me out when i run out of ink a few times.

The only thing bad about is is 1) there is only 3 washing machines to the whole halls. So a lot of waiting unless you go at weird times

2) you miss your bus, then it's 24~ mins *timed it XD* into campus since I walk the same way back 3 -4 times every week caus of my taekwondo training.

I think the 3 washing machines thing is pretty standard. I know Warneford only had three... and I only saw 3 in the washing room at Cotuit.
