Lol, you'll probably end up doing at least one maths essay/project during your degree.

What year are you in "grrr"?

"From Newton to Poincare: The Development of Classical Mechanics as a Mathematical Discipline"

Go!

5000 words=forever :P

How about the birth and development of Galois Theory? Or Hamilton's "discovery" of quaternions?

Hamilton and quaternions would be a good topic to write about. Would also provide you with a good opportunity to learn about handling 3D rotations using quaternions - a topic which is sadly overlooked in most mathematics courses.

Rubbish - I'm covering the whole thing in 2 hours of lectures in a few weeks time. I'm sure you can do it in 5000 words.

You're going to have to PM details of your lecture then, so I can come to the lecture and take some notes!! LOL

"The Riemann Hypothesis" - just go and take out a book named "The Music of the Primes" and pretty much copy it into your essay :p:.

bit trite for a third year essay...
For a 3rd year essay, I think you have to choose a topic you already know something about, or at least are extremely interested in, or you will find writing the essay very hard work.

So what are your areas of interest? Pure? (e.g. Analysis? Group Theory? Galois Theory? Combinatorics? Complex Variable?) Or Applied? (e.g. Quantum Mechanics, General Relativity, Numerical Methods, Information Theory?)

Oh, and if there are any requirements for the essay (e.g. it must / must not be closely related to a course you are currently studing), that would be useful to know as well.

Oh it's a 3rd year essay :p:?
I always thought doing maths at uni meant no essays

it does - i'm just doing a mickey mouse module cos i'm bored of exams - it's under another dept. you can do electives - but they are normally maths orientated ...so other elective choices were accounting for eg
