Hi there, I have a question on my homework task which reads: "How does the process of salinisation increase desertification". I cannot seem to find a clear answer on the internet, so any type of help would be much appreciated, thanks!

Basically, poor irrigation (artificial application of water to crops) techniques causes water to settle on the surface of the desert soil. As there are high temperatures (yano, desert) the water evaporates (liquid to gas) leaving salt crystals. These salt crystals grow and exert pressure in the dry cracked soil. This obviously makes the cracks increase, making a desert landscape (desertification)BTW, AQA A - unlikely to ask this in the exam but its good for 8 mark questions on effects of marginal land use etc.
