Bike in Swansea

Hi!

Swansea is flat? I mean for ride in bike. I come from La Palma island, it´s pretty little island (700km2 i dunno in milles sorry) and 2400 m of altitude and has a lot of drops.

It worth have a bike in Swansea or maybe it will be better the bus pass to move arround swansea? How much cost a normal bike in uk? cause in spain in decathlon a normal costs about 80-120P, and I dunno what will be better, if buy it in spain and pay a supplement for bring it in the plane, but then i will have to bring for cardiff airportt...

Sorry for my grammar.

I think that Swansea itself is quite flat, but there are plenty of hills around and it's lovely to ride a bike there
I have the same problem with my bike. I'd love to take it with me but I just don't know how I could bring it. The easiest way would be probably to take it in a car, but it's unlikely that anyone will drive me all the way to Wales. And there are no direct fligths from Poland to Cardiff :frown: I've even considered sending it as a package but the cost is almost as high as a new bike. I know it would be easier just to buy a new one once I am in Wales, but I just love MY BIKE

Hahaha! You have the sea... and it goes up from there really. Swansea is pretty much built on hills, however plenty of people have bikes, and if you cycle up them it gets you fit very quickly! There's also a nice cycle path that goes along the sea-front between town and mumbles (not sure if it goes further) which is fairly flat if you're feeling lazy! You'd probably be looking at paying £100+ for a decent bike, although you can get them cheaper, and there is a second hand shop in Uplands too. As for a bus pass... where are you going to be living? If you're hoping to be in the student village, it's a must, since you'll be getting the bus to and from uni unless you want to cycle every day, and it can be cold/wet/windy in Autumn and Winter (and the rest of the year...). On campus it's not really necessary and cheaper to pay for the bus as and when you need it. A bus pass is approx £100 per term, or £2.50 for a return journey (village people may be able to give more specific info on pass prices).

Ooh, and the bike racks on campus are quite exposed, so if you have a very nice bike be aware it might suffer a bit. My flatmate was complaining that keeping it outside made his chain get a bit stiff.

I dunno want to spend a bunch of money in a bike, I am not rich, I only use the bike in Tenerife, in the university town where my family lives I save a lot of time from my family house to my friends house, i save arround 15 minutes.

What are the bike racks like in the village ? :P
I'd be careful about bikes in the village. When I was there about 3 years ago, some guys came round after dark and cut through the chains of nearly every bike in the rack and went off with them. A couple of guys in the flat next to the rack saw one of them and rang the police, but I don't think any of the bikes were recovered. Mine was the only one to escape, probably because it was so old and manky-looking even thieves wouldn't have wanted it! Plus it made a loud clanky noise when you rode it.
That was about 3 years ago though, so things may well have changed bikewise.

For me the best fun is riding on the hills really, up and down (yeah, down is definitely more fun  ). I know that the area is not flat at all, I thought that Swansea is though. But I was there just a few times so please forgive me for giving misleading information
I won't be living in the Village, in fact I will be commuting from Neath :s-smilie: (no, not on a bike :p: ), but I love cycling in general so I don't want to live my bike behind. It is quite light so maybe I'll take it into pieces and send as a parcel, I still have some time to think about it.

There's only one down my end of the village and it kind of looks like a bike shed :s-smilie:
Yeh there are places to keep your bikes in the villlage..there is still a risk of it being damaged cos u do get some people coming in there so I wouldn't recommend getting an expensive bike. I know one guy in my building keeps his inside the building next to the stairs which I guess is an idea.
I got a bus pass for the first 2 terms which cost me about £200 but this term I walk back and for cos its warmer. Riding your bike to uni is easy enough but bear in mind its downhill there and uphill back which would probably be quite tiring! But then again I walk it all the time!

you can pick second hand bikes up really cheap. especially from dumps.
it depends where you are living.
if you are in the village or uplands then is pretty much uphill all the way back.
If you are in Bynmill or on campus then bikes are great. You can cycle to mumbles, uni, tesco ect.
im in uplands and its not to bad to cycle up there but i have never cycled to the village to i cant tell you what thats like.
good way of getting fit i would imagine tho
I live in swansea and im always seeing people with bikes. at te moment swansea is being refurbished (if you can call it that) and it is very busy so a bike would be easier to go back and forth to uni
