Here I will unveil in detail some of my ideas for a Cromwellian Republic of Great Britain and Northern Ireland, which I am sure you will appreciate. Its officially ideology will be "Cromwellian Exceptionalism".

Administration:
Said republic would encourage a massive overhaul of the British political system. Parliament will be abolished along with the monarchy, and a new position of "Lord Protector" will be created to become Head of State, with a bicameral legislature including an upper house known as the "Guardian Council", with the lower house remaining known as the "House of Commons". The members of the first House will be appointed by the Lord Protector from among important people in academia, the arts, law, literature, healthcare etc. The House of Commons will be elected as per usual. The Commons may advise the Lord Protector on the content of the Guardian Council, and may give him lists for consultation, but the Lord Protector may ignore or amend these and draw up his own list if he wishes.

The Guardian Council would be made up of 100 people, the House of Commons of 300 people. The Guardian Council may advise the Lord Protector on all issues but the Lord Protector may ultimately ignore Parliament, issuing Orders in Council to ensure that his will is done. The Lord Protector cannot be removed unless 100% of the Guardian Council vote for his removal. When a Lord Protector dies the Guardian Council and the House of Commons together must elect his successor. The Lord Protector is Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces and all the powers of what were formally the royal prerogative will accrue to him. He will reside in any place of his choosing, with no fixed, official residence, to make government smoother.

If at least 100,000 people sign a petition, then the House of Commons will debate on said petition and the issue will work its way up to the Guardian Council.

Statues of Oliveral Cromwell shall be rected across the country, and the flag resdesigned so that the Welsh dragon is included in it. Cromwell shall be made the national hero of the country and his heroic deeds recounted for eternity.

Economics:
A small state will be promoted in economic policy, with taxes and spending as low as possible. Certain departments like Business and Culture, Media and Sport will be abolished for their inutility, saving money that can be spent on the welfare state and the armed forces. National parks will be sold off. Efficiency and productivity will be encouraged above all things, and entrepreneurship shall be applauded. The powerful and the wealthy shall be celebrated, the weak, cowardly and failures will be despised and neglected, but a well-funded welfare state will keep the poor from forming lynch mobs and armed gangs.

Art:
Art that represents nothing will not be considered art. The state will not intervene to ban certain types of art or to have their progenitors shot, but will instead open a state-sponsored museum mocking and ridiculing nonsensical styles of art like abstract art and modernist art. Free copies of James Joyce's Ulysses will be distributed so that the entire country will marvel in their stupidity, and they will be dissected and taught in schools so that students will be able to see the fatuity and idiocy of such ridiculous pieces of work.

Education:
Education will be fully privatised, with the exception of the school cirriculum, which will be made to include seminars on the hero Oliver Cromwell, with his heroic deeds being recounted to generations of students who will grow to imitate him and to learn of his piety and virtue. It will be made mandatory for students to memorise quotes from Cromwell and to salute portraits of Cromwell, which must be plastered on the walls of every school. Teachers must pass a rigorous examination, which will ensure the best quality teaching for pupils. Students will be taught to admire brave, courageous heroes like Julius Caesar, Oliver Cromwell, Augustus, Napoleon, Trajan, Babur, Sulla and Marius, as well as Pericles, Demosthenes and Nader Shah, whilst being taught to despise failures, tyrants and cowards like Mark Antony, Louis XVI, Charles I and Louis XIV, and be taught to admire great thinkers like Aristotle, Plato, Nietzsche and Socrates, whilst disdaining fools like Rousseau, Kant and Sartre.

Society:
Eugenics will be encouraged to bring about strength and virility, and maintain healthy genes, whilst the weak and useless will die out. Sexual relationships will be unregulated, indeed, a Greek view of said relationships will be encouraged. Homosexuality will be neither censured nor praised, but close friendship will be warmly looked upon, as will individual initiative, as opposed to family loyalty. Greek-style "Sacred Band" units will be introduced into the armed forces, whereby male lovers will be able to form entire brigades to fight in battle, for the honour and glory of our civilisation. Marxists, pacifists and socialists will be laughed at and publicly humiliated as cowards, losers and failures, but they will not be targeted for violence or punishment by the mob, indeed, any spontaneous eruption of the mob (rioting, sit-ins without reason, etc) will be dealt with savagely by the security forces, and will involve killings and arrests.

Armed Forces:
Spending on the armed forces will be exponentially increased, as shall its size and scope, and recruiting will be fiercely and shamelessly advertised. There will be a period of National Service, whereby all male citizens will enrol for two years. Being a soldier will be promoted as something glorious, heroic and rewarding, as well as life-affirming.

These are just some thoughts that came by, what are your thoughts?

There is literally nothing in this proposal that is desirable, and calling it 'Cromwellian' will do nothing but inflame our relations with our near neighbours. Cromwell was a complicated man, but he rightfully deserves much of the criticism that has been passed down on him.

Given the high regard Cromwell is held in in some socialist and communist circles, perhaps a better title for your state would be something along the lines of 'The People's Socialist Republic of GB & NI'

Not an argument.
I beg to differ.

Aside from the fact that Cromwell was a slimy little *******, your system would fail within a matter of months (more likely a matter of a few weeks, actually). You quite clearly don't understand conscription; you've actually proposed peacetime National Service for no reason, and you want a ridiculously oversized military force which would serve no other purpose than to empty the treasury.

You think you could fund a mass welfare state while slashing taxes and closing down some of the largest-earning industries in the nation. You say that you will encourage productivity and efficiency. How that is to be achieved while funding an even worse (if conceivable) and more expensive version of the NHS, on an already bar-empty treasury, might I add, is beyond me.

You've made comments on a whole bunch of different political views which you obviously don't understand, and you're just trying to sound cool and edgy. Actually, you just sound like a ****.

Many people from where i'm from (Liverpool) are of Irish descent so will hate Cromwell, Your "administration" also seems a little too authoritarian.

Taxes and Spending shouldn't be dramatically reduced otherwise there won't be enough money for the government to spend on stuff like healthcare and education etc.

Whether you agree with the quality of art or not, censorship reduces freedom and it is completely unnecessary

Eugenics also infringes on personal freedom

There is no reason to increase the size of the armed forces or for national service. Whereas i personally respect soldiers, most of them are normal people so they shouldn't be worshiped as heroes

We do in our ****!

Well, maybe a bit.

Under Cromwell, the English Revolution had been bold enough to carry out a thorough demolition of all the feudal remnants that were hindering the free development of capitalist property relations. The Russian revolutionary Leon Trotsky, who described Cromwell 300 years later as the 'lion of the 17th century', summed up his role thus:
'Cromwell's task consisted of inflicting as shattering a blow as possible upon the absolutist monarchy, the court nobility and the semi-Catholic Church which had been adjusted to the needs of the monarchy and the nobility. For such a blow, Cromwell, the true representative of the new class, needed the forces and passions of the masses of people.'

But this wouldn't be properly socialist in modern times, since it'd be imperialist, not democratic enough, involve privatisation, low taxes and with such a large military presence and mobilisation, would be a Bonapartist regime.

Really? I can't say I've come across that, most socialists I've spoken with have been critical of Cromwell, particularly regarding his actions in Ireland. Unusually authoritarian circles perhaps?

In any case, workers' ownership of the means of production is not mentioned once. What 'Cato the Elder' has described seems like a quasi-fascist system.

The left wing, which consists of the Greens (), Old Labour, Plaid Cymru, SNP, Trade Unionist & Socialist Coalition, Sinn Féin, SDLP etc. etc.

Old Labour alone:
McDonald - 1924, 1929

Attlee - 1945, 1950

Wilson - 1964, 1966, 1974, 1974

Lacks influence? Then what about the rise of feminism and LGBT rights, freedom of opinion, freedom of religion, secularisation, i.e. egalitarianism? A truly socialist ideal.

The SNP won the Scottish region in the 2015 general election.
