V909 - Equality (Amendment) Bill 2015, TSR Government

EQUALITY (AMENDMENT) BILL 2015
An Act to amend the Equality Act 2010 to give asexuality the same legal recognition and protection as bisexuality, homosexuality and heterosexuality.

BE IT ENACTED by The Queen's most Excellent Majesty, in accordance with the provisions of the Parliament Acts 1911 and 1949, and by the authority of the same, as follows:-

PREAMBLE: The purpose of this amendment is not to change the clinical definition of sexual orientation, but to provide an equal level of legal recognition for individuals who identify as 'asexual' and face similar ridicule and potential discrimination as those who identify with certain sexual orientations.

1: AMENDMENT
(1) In the Equality Act 2010 Chapter 1, Section 12 (2) is added:

For the purposes of this act asexuality is a protected characteristic.

(2) The numbering is amended accordingly.
(3) In the Equality Act 2010 Explanatory Notes (Commentary on Sections, Part 2, Chapter 1, Section 12), Paragraph 55 is amended to read:

This section defines the protected characteristic of sexual orientation as being a person’s:
  • sexual orientation towards people of the same sex as him or her (in other words the person is a gay man or a lesbian)
  • sexual orientation towards people of the opposite sex from him or her (the person is heterosexual)
  • sexual orientation towards people of both sexes (the person is bisexual)
  • lack of sexual attraction to anyone or low or absent interest in sexual activity (the person is asexual)

2: COMMENCEMENT, SHORT TITLE AND EXTENT
(1) This Act may be cited as the Equality (Amendment) Act 2015.
(2) This Act shall extend to the United Kingdom; and
(3) Shall come into force immediately.

Notes
Contrary to popular belief asexual individuals face bullying and discrimination by virtue of their sexuality. However due to the disputed designation of asexuality as a 'sexual orientation' there is no legal protection for asexual Britons from discrimination as exists for the three legally recognised sexual orientations as well as for race, age, gender etc. Nevertheless both asexual individuals and discrimination against asexuals exist. This House should concern itself not primarily with clinical definitions but with the protection of the people of the United Kingdom.

Nay, this government was offered a simple adjustment that changes this from protecting an extra 1% to an extra 2%, making it protect EVERY individual in the land. Once again, feedback is ignored on the basis that it takes up time and their vanity project will pass regardless.
