Just a question or two

Hey guys,

So I'm in my first year of Sixth Form studying Biology, German and Maths and i've been looking at the universities and courses which i may want to take.
For a while now, I've been quite interested in Marine Biology, and for this, Bangor really caught eye, but after looking into the different courses, Marine Biology and Zoology as a joint honours also looks quite interesting, but sadly it's only Bangor university which i could that offers this joint combination.

Ok, so for my questions,

#1 So, Bangor is of course in Wales where they speak Welsh. One this that is making me nervous about Bangor is that not being able to speak Welsh, as i have it in my mind that this will make life tricky, with the local area and such. So does not knowing Welsh actually have any effect of life at Bangor, especially with getting a Job, for if i choose to try that.

#2 So i've been trying to choose between Marine Biology and Marine Biology and Zoology as a joint. Will doing Marine Biology and Zoology as a join put me at a big disadvantage when going for jobs to do with either Marine Biology or Zoology agaisnt someone who did just Marine Biology, or who did just Zoology. I was looking at the coure details, and year 1 and 2 seem to be pretty much the same, bar a module in each year and it seems to be year 3 which is where is is majorly different. Especially as Bangor is the only university to do, it makes me think that everyother university sees them to be pointless to do together.

Sorry for the long post, and thanks in advance for reading.

Hey. I'll try to answer both questions.

1) I don't speak Welsh and I've never had an issue. No one has problems. That is all there is to say on the matter! This really shouldn't worry you

2) Like you've said, they seem the same. Well, a lot of courses in the same school have very similar first and second years. I'm not in marine sciences (is that what it is called?) but from what it seems you would specialise in your third year. Joint honours, especially in this case, would not put you at a disadvantage. You pick 50/50 modules from each school. I really advise you contact the school's administrator for further information, and further to that, I think you should come to some open days if you have not already.

Also, I'm a joint honours student from two different schools and it doesn't put me at a disadvantage. My combination provides me with a wider skill set.

If you have any further questions I suggest you check out the 'ask a current student' thread which is sticky on the Bangor page. We have answered a load of questions there. Hope I helped!

Thank you for your reply!

I spent a good hour or so going through the 'ask a current student' thread, which really helped to give an insight to Bangor, and my doubts about not speaking Welsh have faded!

I guess now, i get to spend the next year deciding between Newcastle and Bangor, as these are the two which are looking most favourable for me to go to. Oh a what a fun time that will be trying to decide :P

I'm from Wales originally and can't speak Welsh and it's no problem in Bangor for anything! Everyone speaks English to students really!
