Passing first year

Obviously I'm aware than 40% is the pass mark, but is there any leeway on this? There are 120 credits to earn, so if on one exam worth 10 credits you only got say 30%, but you passed everything else, what happens with regards to moving onto second year?

There is sometimes something called a compensated fail, where you'll be allowed to progress if you've failed by a relatively narrow margin and passed everything else. However, policies on this vary from department to department and it's common to find that fails in core modules cannot be compensated.

Otherwise, you'll have to resit in August.

Best plan of action is to do well first time around - don't forget that while first year usually doesn't count towards your final degree classification, graduate employers can and will ask to see first year grades and if they see that you only started working when it suited you, ie in second year, it will not reflect well.
