The Student Room Group

Does it matter what you wear for an interview?

The answer is YES!
Hear it from someone who has been there, and done that - our student Queenie in her blog.

Why do you think it's important to dress to impress at an interview, and what do you think is acceptable attire?

Because at that stage they actually give a **** about the impression you give - perfect interview lasts ten seconds. If they don't like you when you walk through that door, the odds are that they still won't like at the end of the interview

Very true Andy, but there is always an opportunity to turn it around too! Any advice on how to impress in the first 10 seconds? A smile goes a long way!
The way you dress for the interview demonstrates (to the employer) your attitude towards the job.

Usually a good suit gets everyone switched on and gives the good impression; also the way you walk says a lot. If you walk with a swagger it instantly gives the game away and shows you don't really belong in a suit. If you walk relaxed but confident, that's it, the room is yours. Additionally, the handshake is key; it must be firm, but not firm enough to yank their arm off.

For a part time in retail or wherever it's still important to dress smart. You would be surprised how many people think they can go to an interview in jeans just because it's somewhere like Topshop.

Also being very smiley and bubbly is key too. This is the first impression your boss is getting from you and will compare this to how customers will view you too (my manager said he always treats the first 10 seconds of an interview like customer interaction)
