The Student Room Group
When I drink at uni, I tend to say to myself I drink 2 nights a week, the nights depend on whats on, who goes out etc.

Of course I have drunk on more than this, for example freshers week went way to fast for comfort, however because your at uni doesnt mean its a license to drink all the time. That does cause problems and the stories you hear about spending the entire first year wasted are just stories.

Just be sensible, limit yourself, if you take loads to get drunk, dont do it all the time, just be controlled.
i think its when you constantly think about drink and cant give it up.
An alcoholic, for me, is when you excessively drink (beyond recommended units) on a daily basis. It could be that you drink a lot because you spend more time with your friends - who also enjoy drinking. Remember that drinking could also be a social thing.

hmmm, drinking alone happens although it's usually a can of cider while revising, I'm in a very intensive course (9-5 everyday) so does that make a couple of cans while revising as a relaxant bad?
I would say no, as long as it doesnt become an everyday otherwise you cant revise thing.

I personally revise best with one or two cans of carlsberg and some rammstein playing in the background, but thats just me.
I find myself drinkg more and more, and more often alone. At the momen I am on my 6th smirnoff ice of the night, and I am just sitting myself, feeling sorry for myself. I find myself now drinking more and more often, and feel I need to drink most days to make it through, or relax or actually feel better about myself.

My GP asked me last week if I though I had a problem, and I said no I didn't think so, but I was relying on alcohol etc for sleeping at night.
An alcoholic would be defined by someone addicted to drink- basically you couldnt go without, are reliant on the buzz/feeling it gives you, or would go out of your way in order to be able to drink.
To simply drink alot wouldnt make you an alcoholic.
Its the uncontrolable NEED to drink that would make you an alcoholic

I dont think it's an addiction. however I do drink to cure my insomnia, to forget all my problems...etc. although it can make me angry when I'm drunk sometimes

That sounds like me, I am in a very low mood though at the moment and I doubt the alcohol is helping.

I wouldn't call myself an alcoholic, i can take it or leave it. At the start of this year after everyone had left and there wasn't much to do I drank a lot. Now exams are coming up I'm pretty much staying in the majority of the time, maybe go out once a week/every other week for a couple. But the main problem is being around toher people who drink.

Addiction depends on your personality and what you yourself consider your limits and whether or not you can stick to them. E.g. saying you'll stay in because you have an exam the next day, yet letting yourself being dragged outta the house is a bit of a problem. Whereas, saying you won't go out drinking because you don't feel like it, but somebody calls you and invites you out and you go but maybe only have a couple, or just drink softs, isn't really a big deal.
definition of an alcoholic= ME, haha
I drink loads but not recently due to the run up to exams
Since i turned 18 i have spent loads on alcohol, in the space of about a month from my birthday (february) i spent 700 pounds on drinking and going out, at one point i was going out most days, i just think it is because i was legally allowed, things have calmed down now, now that i have got alot of work to do

drinking alone

Pff I drink alone occasionally and would hardly consider myself an alcoholic...
I think people need to be alerted to the seriousness of this issue.

It sounds to me that you have a problem and you should give up alcohol at least for a period of time to prove to yourself that you are do not. Alcohol is actually a stimulent and will keep you awake unless you drink so much that you pass out (which is different to sleeping)... It is also no cure to your problems. I should know, my borther died from alcohol poisoning, aged 25 and my mother died from Alcoholism, aged 44.

I still drink, in moderation.

Ok for all those students out there, what makes an alcoholic?? I drink, and by drink I mean a LOT of drink. I'm not trying to boast, but what would you say makes an alcoholic, and have any students had trouble giving alcohol up? I know it's unhealthy for me but I think it's just a leisurely thing and I could give it up if I needed to!

Thanks for any input

If you can not keep away from drink, you are alcoholic.
