4mu+4mu=2ma+4mb

e=(b-a)/u
=1/2
so 2(b-a)=u
so b=(u+2a)/2

substituting in gives, 8mu=2ma+m(2u+4a)
so 6u=6a
so a =u
while b=3u/2 (using b=(u+2a)/2

c. b velocity after 2nd collision=d

4mb=4md+mc
so 6u=4d+c (1)
so c=6u-4d
e=(c-d)/4
so e=6u-5d/1.5u from (1)

If no further collisions then d>a and so d>u

e<u/1.5u
and so
e<2/3
