Has anyone managed this? And how? How long after the original breakup?

It can't be unheard of because your asking the question.

You need to first ask yourself why you want the said person back. Secondly who broke up with who. Third why did you break up?

Everyone's situation is different. What works for me may not work for you.

An ex should remain an ex. There is a reason why you broke up.

Generally speaking, unless your break-up was due to a lack of commitment, distance, or some other issue which can be fixed with space and space, it's not worth going back. Whatever the reason for your break-up, without a reasonable amount of time and space from each other you cannot fully analyse the relationship/circumstances with a rational mind and come to a sound conclusion. So, do just that; back away for a bit, see how you feel in a few months time. If you can fix what broke you up, then give it another shot.
