bad uni marks, making me upset

at school i was an a grade student and generally succeeded in most things academically. i worked really hard for that. however now since im at uni im finding that i keep getting bad marks (low 2.2s etc) even though im trying really hard, maybe even putting even more work in than at school. basically im working my butt off and not getting anything back. ij know its only the first year but i want to do well and this is really getting me down. i know so many people who do no work and get crappy marks, which is fair enough, but im really trying here. what should i do?

have you spoken to your tutors/lecturers? Try to get some comprehensive feedback on where you are going wrong, it might be something fixable. Also maybe try to find a study buddy who is doing well and get them to look over some of your stuff. Workshops? It might be just one part of the course that you have grasped wrongly, but its fundamental and is throwing everything else of course too.

I feel your pain! I did horrendously in first year because I hadn't adapted to the different strategies needed in uni work. You can't rely on just your lecture notes anymore - especially for arts and social science subjects, recommended reading becomes more essential to get good marks. Also the focus is on how you argue a point, not necessarily the content or factual knowledge. Like devils_nose said, talk to your tutors for some more feedback and hopefully a few pointers as to where you can improve  good luck!
