ocr bio, cellular control help

just been looking through the spec points for the cellular control unit in the control, genome and environment module and kinda confused by this one:
"Explain the basis of continuous and discontinuous variation by reference to the number of genes which influence the variation"
this was never covered when i was at school and not in the textbook i'm using. am i right in assuming all it wants is that discontinuous variation is controlled by few genes (and vice versa) or does it want more along the lines of co dominance, inheritance and gene loci...
studying this on my own so any help would be mint xxxxx
