By saying 'just' a piece of cloth Agard is saying it, though symbolism for patriotism and pride, is essentially nothing and this simple piece of fabric will long outlive the reader. It's only a piece of cloth, yet it drives people to murder and ignore themselves and morals in order to achieve this big idea of 'glory' that barely even exists. Through the poem Agard asks is it really all worth it? Is it worth dying for a flag, a notion?
