There's no real issue. Just like any other city I guess. You'd get the occasional problems but Plymouth isn't known for it.

Having lived here for 15 years it is only relatively recently that the city's population has become more diverse and this change is going smoothly. There are no real ongoing problems, just a few isolated incidents, and some of those involving minority communties have turned out to be internal disputes.

Im afraid that i have heard differently, a close friend of my says there is quite alot going about, she is of indian origin, and at plymouth uni, however she has had grief from peeps. and she barely looks any different compared to a tanned brit. normally she wouldnt complain, especially coming from bristol, but something must have pissed her off a bit about it, or she wouldn't have said anything.. but the thing you need to watch out for most in plym are the squaddies.. bunch of "think i'm hard" wanna-be arse holes.. they the ones ya gotta watch out for..

Speaking as someone who was a squaddie in Plymouth for 12 years, I find that sort of generalisation just as offensive as any kind of racism.
What's a squaddie?

Think your'll find a lack of squaddies and a large presense of Royals (which are harder, louder and smarter!)

Plymouth has one of the lowest ratio of blacks to whites in the country, however, has a large chineese community.

Gang fights between rival Eastern European groups is the most common.

What you do need to look out for are the wa@nkers who will start on anyone for a fight no matter your orientation. Oh and blame the increased violent drug scene on the liverpool people!

Haha well anyway its a nice place on the whole!
racist terms seem to be bandied about quite a lot by the 'chavs' but on the whole its alright.
considering the massive international presence in Plymouth, i've not seen or heard a single racist issue in the 2 years that I've been here. and thats impressive in an international university city of this size.
hardly 'massive'. maybe at the universiy but not amongst the ordinary population. in my whole year there are 3 non-white people..
i'm not saying plymouth isn't accepting of other cultures, but we are far less multicultural than, say, somewhere like bristol

Yeah agreed, theres mostly white people here, very few foriegners. Not just at uni, but also in Plymouth itself. Fair few polish tho.

As a former student of Uni of Plymouth..... I was in Plymouth for 4 years....I have never experienced so much racism in my life, me and my friends used to have real problem. People used to call us P*KI in the street most of time......you get abuse in clubs from locals..... what was shocking is so many times the students themselves turned out to be recist...especially when you seen them in street after a night out and they are drunk so i guess they blurt out what they have in mind in the drunken state.....
Once this guy came and spat on me and called me P*K* and threatened to get his dog on me, people driving by in their car at night shout p*k* at you...... once I was walking down Barbican the sea front and this driver shows me a middle finger so I show one back to him, and he reverse back in and start shouting at me as if the London bombing was done by me and threatened to get out the car and beat me up.....and what was shocking that his girl friend was calling me p*k* and swearing at me and telling me to go back to Afghanistan and this was at 2-3 pm in broad day light..... I am Indian by the way and living in Europe for past 14 years..... my co worker was slapped in the middle of day in the town centre for being a foreigner
This guy in my hall of residence used to bang on my wall and call me p*k* at night, and he was a student in the same uni......
So yes Plymouth is most definitely racist.....once this 8-10 years old kid called us P*K* while his parents in the house and did not tell him anything......
The Cornwall and Devon is beautiful and I loved surfing and I still go surfing.... despite the racism I had a good time at uni as I met many friends and learnt a lot about life........

the only problem ive seen here was with a soldier, some prick in uniform had obviously been out drinking that day (was rememberance sunday) give the female receptionist in grosvenor casino a ridiculous amount of vile abuse, who the **** he thought he was I don't know but he was one **** of an individual....

heard from my flatmate about one incident of racism but ain't seen any myself.

I have been in Plymouth for the last 2 years and found there to be a lot of racism and a lot of small minded people. What amazes me is the amount of locals that think Plymouth is overrun by ethnic minorities. Compared to other places in the UK, Plymouth doesn't have a significant ethnic minority population.

What are race relations like in Plymouth?

Considering the city has one of the largest chinese communities in the country and there are NEVER any reports of race related violence, i'd say despite its proximity to Cornwall there is very little racism, at least in the public sphere within the city.

Well, I was being assault in June 2010.

Occupation: Student from far east

Location of incident: Barbican in Plymouth.

Injuries: hit on head, broken 3 teeth and broken ear drum.

Reported to the police.

I pay 8750 pound tuition fee only per year for education(not included living cost, rent, gas, electric, water), which is 3 time to the local people, which I don't mind at all. Seriously, What the problem with some of the people in this city why are they so.....(I just don't what to say).

What did we do to, have to deserved this humiliation! What make them better than us so that they can pick anyone to assault them? Seriously, tell me.

All nations can keep UK embassy for political and business reasons. It is absolutely fine. Since, UK dislike people from other countries anyway, why don't making everyone feel happier by closing all British Council, Stop promoting people to come to study. Seriously, Stop Promoting it.

I am just lucky that at least I had an eye witness, so that there is prove for the Police. Due to my conditions I when to NHS and Derriford hospital to get myself fix and it is NOT FREE for me.

As pity for those people who had no eye witness, and not seriously injured, humiliated and called in names. Compare to them I'm just LUCKY. Really lucky that i still have left a ear drum for music. (no spare now)

Whether this is a racist or non racist incident, I just Don't Know.

YOU TELL ME.

All I know is that, Some of the English people can be compared to the people in in the movie "Harold and Kumar 1 and 2". There are the close examples. Watch the movies than you will get the picture.
