Biomedical sciences student-Should i do a studenship?

I'm a 2nd year biomedical sciences student at Queen Mary and i've been looking for some form of internship, part time work or work experience for the summer before my final year. I've been looking at opportunities to gain experience specifically in laboratory-based environment like an industrial placement (I'm not interested in going into medicine or dentistry, so I haven't been looking at any clinical-based work experience). But I've also come across studentships run by a variety of external organisations (http://www.rsb.org.uk/get-involved/grants/undergraduate-studentships) . These typically last between 6-8 weeks during summer, and involve undertaking paid/unpaid research. Apart from that, i know very little about how these projects are structured, or how valuable they are.

If anyone can give me some insight into such projects, or general advice on work experience in biological science, I'd greatly appreciate it =)
Any kind of work/lab experience is very valuable. The grants seem to include consumable money as well so I'd very happily take on a student like that.
