You can email them and request a deferrment, although they can say no, it often depends which uni it is. What one are you after? If you definitely want to take a gap year then email them now and tell them your reasons for wanting to defer and that you really love the course and feel you will have more to offer after experiencing life outside education etc and see what they say!

They will probably not like you telling them so late.
The chances of them allowing deferring are hard to judge, some places and courses will do it happily (good places I'm talking about here, not just desperate places) whilst others will refuse outright. There are no guarantees of success or failure.

Didn't have time to learn how to drive during A levels?

^ Well if you didn't have time for a job, how could you learn to drive? You wouldn't have the money.

I've a lot of places will say it's ok on results day, but others won't let you. Really depends ont he uni.
I'm in a similar situation to the OP. I currently suffer from depression and I don't know if I will be ready to start uni in September/October so I am hoping that, if I need it - this is only a last resort, I can defer on health grounds. If you do give the uni a reason, particularly a health-related reason, would they be more likely to accept?
If you're not sure yet, you'll just have to wait until August and hope they let you defer. You could always email them and ask what the chances are of them agreeing to this.

I dont need a job to learn how to drive! i wud just like the experience of a job and the conveinency of being able to drive. Specially that the uni is rather far away.

Just to double check defered as in i meet the conditional but delay my entry till september 2008
I deferred fairly late on the first time I went to uni. Hubby wanted to quit his job because he hated it, so I decided to get a job instead for the year to support us whilst he searched for another one.

I wrote to the uni and they replied and said I could start the following year. No problems.

Just send them a letter.
